Last week on The Bastard Executioner, Lady Love (Flora Spencer-Longhurst) shows her political prowess, impressing her chamberlain Milus (Stephen Moyer). Gaveston is a wanted man, and Love secures money and security for her shire, if they deliver him. Father Ruskin (Timothy V. Murphy) now knows that Annora (Katey Sagal) is not pagan, as she holds The Books of Nazarene (the future New Testament). The clergy wants to destroy it and her. Jessamy (Sarah Sweeney) catches Wilkin (Lee Jones) and Love in an embrace and goes crazy. She is sedated and tied to a bed. The bad priests come and kidnap the warrior priest and Maddox’s son, Luca. Annora shows Wilkin a vision of when he was a baby, and The Dark Mute (Kurt Sutter) cuts down a dozen men seemingly by magic.

Spoilers below.

The Bastard Executioner 1.9 “The Bernadette Maneuver/Cynllwyn Bernadette” recap/review: This next to last episode of the season begins with a Gaveston retrieval road trip. Milus, in a rare happy mood, tells the men that maybe they will sing songs about them.

Wilkin: “Full of sour notes and sharp rhymes.” Hmm… Wilkin’s bitter.

Lady Love is showing her sharpest claws and threatens Jessamy with death if she does not stop the delusions. However, if she acknowledges “God’s truth,” her and her children will be taken care of. In other words, “Bitch, get away from my man or I’ll kill you!”

Annora somehow knows the boy was kidnapped. The archdeacon is using the boy as leverage, to get to the healer and the scarred knight.

Poor simple Ash (Darren Evans) is tricked by the pretty non-dead twin, who runs off. He makes it up to the men by scouting the place with the lure of his pet deer. He makes it up to himself by cutting up the pretty girl on the side of the road. He has been the killer all along?

Corbett about Gaveston: “He is there. I can smell the arrogance.”

The men bond over a sexist joke. Well, I guess not sexist for the 12th century.

Whoa… arrow through the cheeks. And Corbett shines once again in his malicious glee, filled with imagination. In order to get one of the men to give up Gaveston, he threatens to cut off all the penises of the dead men, stuff it into his mouth, and leave him dead in the front for everyone to see.

Toran: “Remember when our greatest dread was a weak harvest?” Toran feels more at home in this violent life than that of a farmer.

For the host, Corbett orders Wilkin to torture his mistress until he signs the affadavit. Wilkin refuses, but Corbett promises to hand over another man to them for revnge.

Wilkin: “Only you would use death to buy pain.”

Wilkin gets out of it by whispering to the girl to scream as if it is killing her, when it will be but a pinch. Milus isn’t fooled, but the writ gets signed.

Corbett gets his greatest revenge on Gaveston. Remember that humiliation? Yes… a penis for a penis. There’s a lot of penis this episode.

Gaveston is put through a fake trial and then beheaded, in an act of kindness by Wilkin for Milus. Look closely… the head blinked. So gruesome. It was not even a clean neck cut. Gaveston got beheaded at the mouth.

They get home and Milus is kind of mellow. He tells Love to inform WIlkin of his missing son because she is gentle. And he seems regretful about the beating of his man.

Wilkin promises to find the priest and the boy, and finds Annora in his house. “You are the devil Annora of the Elders.”

She called him my son. Huh? Oh, that’s the reason for all of this.

This episode of The Bastard Executioner was full of reveals and took a nice character development turn. Love got harder. Milus (and Toran) got softer. Ash is a maniac. Jessamy is a bit saner. And a jackass got beheaded. Quite a nice full show this week.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

The season finale of The Bastard Executioner airs next Tuesday night at 10pm ET on FX.

  1. Stopped watching. Bad show. I hope it gets ancelled so Sutter review his writing skills to improve.
