10 Cloverfield Lane cast

Two trailers later and we are no closer to figuring out what exactly Dan Trachtenberg‘s 10 Cloverfield Lane is about.

A new trailer debuted on AMC last night during The Walking Dead midseason premiere, and Paramount has released it online, so watch you can it here below.

So far, we now that the new movie isn’t a sequel to Cloverfield, but rather it is its “blood relative.” The first trailer revealed that the secret film was shot under a different name and that Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams would be involved as the film’s producer. The film stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr.

Much like the marketing for the first Cloverfield film, 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s is based on the mystery box strategy that Abrams is so well-known for. All we know is that Goodman’s character believes that he saved Winstead from some sort of monster and that it is best to stay in the bunker until the threat is neutralized. In the new trailer that, we see how Winstead became stuck in an underground bunker with Goodman and Gallagher.

As previously reported, Winstead was supposedly in a severe car accident and was saved by Goodman. When she awakens she is told that she had been saved and that the world outside the bunker is no more. But this trailer reveals a little more about Gallagher’s character. For one thing, he isn’t related to Goodman’s; in fact, he broke into the bunker looking for a safe haven, which is why we see him in an arm cast in most of the trailers.

Paramount has been doing an excellent job revealing very little about the film, which plays off the mystery box strategy that Abrams likes to employ. But unlike his The Force Awakens, 10 Cloverfield Lane has a viral marketing campaign that bridges the gap between Cloverfield and the new film. Based on that campaign, we learn that Goodman is playing Howard Stambler, an employee of Bold Futura, which is a one of the subsidiary companies of the Tagruato Corporation, the same company that produced the Slusho drink that was seen in the Cloverfield viral marketing campaign.

So perhaps Stambler is one of those employees who knew about the dangers of what Tagruato was doing or he was deemed a crazy person for trying to blow the whistle on their actions. Of course, none of that is revealed in the campaign — that would just spoil some of the movie. But the biggest question is how is 10 Cloverfield Lane is considered a “blood-relative” to Cloverfield? Will it be monsters? Does this take place after the events of Cloverfield?

10 Cloverfield Lane opens in theaters on March 11, 2015.
