Sing

Singing competitions are where amateurs and aspiring singers go in hopes of achieving their dreams. Many of us have seen how it all plays out on shows like The Voice or American Idol. But what about the animals? They can sing too, right? Well in a new trailer released by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, Sing answers that question using more than 85 hit songs and an all-star voice cast.

The animated film will see animals of all species auditioning in a singing competition, in hopes of winning a once in a lifetime record deal.

Check out the trailer below.

Directed by Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), Sing is set in a world where animals and insects are like humans, as the beginning of the trailer likes to put it. They are moms and dads, have jobs, and come from all walks (or crawls or slithers) of life. With his stage venue on the verge of bankruptcy, a mild-mannered koala named Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), decides to stage a singing competition in a last-ditch effort to save it. Among some of the competitors are a stressed out mother Pig (Reese Witherspoon), a saxaphone-playing con mouse (Seth MacFarlane), a porcupine rockstar (Scarlett Johansson), a hip-hop gorilla (Taron Egerton), and a shy elephant (Tori Kelly).

I can see this playing well with younger audiences who are big fans of the song selections – and are otherwise unaware of how dated said selected songs are. However, if utilized correctly, then the film could work for audiences of all ages. They’ve certainly got a strong voice cast. It’s only the first trailer after all, it’s set for a December 21st, 2016 release, and the film will have a chance to prove itself with many more trailers and clips,

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“˜Sing’ stars Buster Moon (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Buster is an eternal optimist””okay, maybe a bit of a scoundrel””who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Now facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Five lead contestants emerge: A mouse (Seth MacFarlane) who croons as smoothly as he cons, a timid teenage elephant (Tori Kelly) with an enormous case of stage fright, an overtaxed mother (Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon) run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets, a young gangster gorilla (Taron Egerton) looking to break free of his family’s felonies, and a punk-rock porcupine (Scarlett Johansson) struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo. Each animal arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life.
