Last week on The Flash, we got the serial killer backstory of Hunter Zolomon aka Zoom (Teddy Sears). Barry (Grant Gustin) almost lost his mind with his need to save Earth-2 from Zoom. Cisco (Carlos Valdes) agreed to vibe to create a breach, and was successful with Harry’s (Tom Cavanagh) help. Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) moved in and immediately got kidnapped by Zoom. Barry sacrificed his speed to save Wally. Then Zoom kidnapped Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker).

Spoilers below.

The Flash 2.19 “Back to Normal” review: Barry is having a hard time being “normal.” The opening scenes are a lesson in good writing and direction, as the parallel mornings really hone in on the vast differences of Barry’s previous existence to this new one.

Wells leaves to find Jesse. He does, but she predictably rejects him. He gets into a car accident (people named Wells have no luck with cars). It’s a meta with an ax to grind on the other Wells. Griffin Grey kidnapped Wells to fix his power – super strength with super aging. He is 18 going on 45.

Hunter tells Caitlin he loves her and that she will one day love him. I think he actually believes that. Caitlin comes face to face with Killer Frost. They strike a deal, that involves scientific molecular blah-blah-blah so they can help each other escape. They bond over their bitchy mothers.

Barry and Iris (Candace Patton) are CSI on the case of the missing Wells. Iris hovered around a lot this episode. You can tell she is still torn about the whole “are she and Barry meant to be” dilemma. She does give him a really good pep talk. Hey, have you met her father? He is King Pep Talk.

Wally is intent on thanking The Flash, even though Joe (Jesse L. Martin) was pushing back on it. But Wally’s sincerity moves Joe (best dad ever). It moves Barry too. Barry really made a difference in Wally’s life. If he never got his speed back, he could be proud of that.

Joe, Cisco, and Barry find the strong man.

Cisco: “Ok. He-Man’s got some power.” He hits slow Barry with a barrel and visibly ages in front of him.

Caitlin’s experiment works (of course), and Killer Frost is free (of course), and then she tries to kill Caitlin (of course). Zoom speeds in just in time to save Caitlin and kill Frost. He expects thanks. For a super smart scientist guy, he is really dumb about women. And he gets even dumber when he decides to conquer every world, and to take Caitlin with him for the ride.

They locate Harry and line the Flash suit just enough for one punch, goading Griffin into expending energy and aging faster.

Wells and Jesse make up tearfully. “My little Jesse Quick.” Wells is so damn happy to be reunited with his daughter, he is going to help Barry get his speed back… by “creating another particle acceleration explosion.” Um… that seems dangerous.

Solid episode. Griffin Grey was obviously just the means to move the bigger story along, and it felt like that a bit while watching. Still, having Caitlin come face-to-face with the fun version of herself was great. Sears is awesome as the crazy psycho. I did not like “boring” Jay that much. My favorite scene of the episode was the Wally thanking Barry one. That surprised me because I was getting annoyed with Wally’s shoulder chip, and didn’t think I would like him if it was gone, as it was in that moment. I was nervous that they wouldn’t be able to be a whole family, the four of them, but it looks like they will.

I still need to know… who is the guy in the mask? My husband says Earth-2 Wally West aka the real Earth-2 Flash, and I’m inclined to believe him.

The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8:00pm ET on The CW.

The CW’s synopsis:

The Flash
Back to Normal (Ep# 219)

Realizing another brilliant Wells could help track Griffin’s location, Barry asks Jesse (guest star Violett Beane) to help. Meanwhile, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) corners Joe (Jesse L. Martin) about The Flash. John Showalter directed the episode written by Brooke Roberts & Katherine Walczak (#219). Original airdate 4/26/2016.
