The Russo Brothers React To ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Honest Trailer (Video)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

This week, Anthony Russo and his brother Joe Russo, the directors of Marvel Studios’ soon-to-open Captain America: Civil War and the forthcoming two-part event Avengers: Infinity War, sat down with the good folks of Screen Junkies responsible for their hilarious – and often infuriating – “Honest Trailers” series to dissect and discuss with warm candor the Honest Trailer made for their first major Marvel Movie – 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

You can watch the full video here below. I’ve also included the Winter Soldier Honest Trailer without commentary for your viewing pleasure.

The Russos are good sports about the gentle ribbing Screen Junkies gave their Marvel Studios debut (and also the biggest film the indie film and television veterans had made at that point in their careers), and they offer some terrific insight into the making of Winter Soldier and their love of Captain America, the position he plays in the larger Marvel Universe, and helping him find his place in the modern world.

Joe reportedly told the mighty writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who are also writing Infinity War), during the scripting phase that “I’m not gonna f*****g let Honest Trailers beat us up over this lapse in logic. So we’re gonna fix this story point.” The brothers clearly didn’t want to give Screen Junkies too many reasons to tear Winter Soldier apart, and judging by the run time of the Honest Trailer that resulted, they succeeded.

Still, this is an Honest Trailer so there will be nitpicking. Winter Soldier is not without its share of plot-holes, but even Screen Junkies has to admit that it’s a pretty awesome flick. Watch the actual Honest Trailer to the very end for a sweet tribute to the late Robin Williams, who died several months after Winter Soldier‘s theatrical release.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is currently available to own on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD. Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters on May 6th, 2016.
