Benedict Wong Says ‘Doctor Strange’ Character Will Not Be Similar To The Comics

Wong Doctor Strange

It’s easy to see why Doctor Strange may be one of the most anticipated superhero movies of the year, but it is not without its share of controversy, namely the racially charged one that surrounds it. Tilda Swinton plays the Ancient One, a character that is depicted in the comics as an Asian man. Then there is the heavy Asian influence that could be seen in the teaser trailer. While that is more than obviously bothersome, one of the film’s cast is coming out not necessarily in defense of this but to speak about how his character won’t be like the one in the comics and reflect some dirty stereotypes.

Benedict Wong, who plays Wong in the movie, spoke about how he won’t be playings “a tea-making manservant.” More on the story below.

Speaking to Den of Geek, here is what Wong had to say about his character:

“I’m certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant. We’re heading in a different direction. He’s more of a drill sergeant”¦There isn’t any martial arts for Wong in Doctor Strange, actually, he’s more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He’s one of the masters of sorcery.”

For those who are not familiar with Doctor Strange, the Kamar-Taj is the home to sorcerers and mystics including the Ancient One. In the comics, Wong was raised in the Kamar-Taj, where he was a student of martial artist and mystic of the small community but also received training in how to serve a master sorcerer. He was then sent to America by the Ancient One to serve Doctor Strange.

Changes from the comics to the film just comes with the territory. Some may not like it, but in this case, and with the controversy, the changes Doctor Strange will have will be a welcomed one. Being a manservant to a white lead would probably have been that final nail in the proverbial coffin for this movie had they gone this direction. But since they didn’t it should be interesting to see how Wong will motivate and push our title character to his limits to help him become the Sorcerer Supreme.

He also spoke about if there will be more Marvel movies for the character and his excitement for seeing the finished product:

“That would be nice! No, we’ll start off with the first one. I’m just happy nearly completing in Doctor Strange. I’m very excited to see what happens.”

Wong also made an appearance in the Infinity Gauntlet story arc, so there is a chance that he could reappear in a film outside of the Doctor Strange film franchise. We will just have to wait and see if he reprises his role once again in future films.

Doctor Strange will open in theaters on November 4th.
