I can’t help but show a little love to a fellow contributor here at Geeks Of Doom. Rick Laprade has written several articles for this site, so it only seems fair to have this site write about him, right? After all those writes/rights, I think I just made a left! Anyway, this little review is less about Laprade and more about the comic The Adventures Of Miru #1, since that’s sort of what I do here. Keep on reading to see what all the fuss is about.

The first issue starts off with a bang, at least on paper. Something slams into the ground with a big kaboom. Well, truthfully, it was a “THOOM!” but you get my point. Upon impact, it draws the attention of an android/mechwarrior mashup called 9teen and it’s onboard compatriot Scribbles. Scribbles is a super intelligent lab rat that has a penchant for tinkering and weaponry; he’s more Danger Mouse in form than Pinky & The Brain. Short story shorter, the crater contains a small blue creature the likes of which they have never seen before. So what do you do when you find a strange being that falls from the sky? You take it home of course!

Arriving back at their village, Tarsa, they are confronted by scared and belligerent townsfolk. Not wanting to relinquish their newfound oddity to the howling hoards, Scribbles and 9teen find themselves at a disadvantage. That is, until help arrives to aid in their escape. It is quickly determined that this small being is actually a dragon. But since dragons were sent away long ago, this only makes the situation that much more enigmatic. Upon awakening, our rescuers find that this dragon has absolutely no recollection of who he is or why he’s there. Determined to help, they decide that a quest to find a sacred text will be the their best recourse.

But they aren’t the only ones with an interest in the little blue dragon. The diabolical Dr. Monopoly has plans of his own. Summoning some of his most loyal subjects, he hatches a plan to gain possession of the dragon to further his scheme. However, we are given the chance to see that his master is calling the shots and will not take any failure lightly. What happens next? Well, I guess we will have to read issue two to find out!

The writing is entertaining and focused, never swaying too far from the story. Laprade does a stellar job of keeping it light and fun while still keeping the ball rolling. Artist J. McClary brings some gorgeous line work to the pages and Eleonora Dalla Rosa loads it all down with vibrant colors! I was reminded of the series The Maxx immediately because of the rich colors and beautifully drawn panels.

Personally, I don’t know Rick Laprade, but his work speaks volumes. He’s surrounded himself with talent and this premiere issue has got everything it needs to turn into an amazing ongoing series. I suspect that you’ll want a copy of this if you are able to find one. Rumor has it that it’s selling out in comic stores everywhere. So don’t delay, grab one today!
