HBO aired the pilot to Westworld last Sunday, and people clearly tuned in to watch as Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy‘s retelling/quasi-sequel of Michael Crichton’s 1973 movie of the same name drew in 3.3 million viewers, making it one of the network’s biggest premieres since True Detective.

Based on critics and viewers’ reactions, the show should have no trouble at all being the next genre hit after Game of Thrones airs its final episode. But if you didn’t catch the season opener this Sunday or simply don’t have access to HBONow, today is your lucky day, as you have the opportunity to see what everybody is talking about. There would be no point in talking about the pilot episode as we’ve covered that in the Violent Delights podcast earlier this week. But before you listen to that, perhaps you should watch the show first to get some context as it explores many themes of morality, violence, and the nature of one’s reality.

Just in case you don’t know what the show is about, Westworld is set in a fictional theme park where highly advanced AI called hosts interact with newcomers (park guests) in a fictionalized world set in the days of the old west. Guests get to live out their wildest dreams of being cowboys or outlaws, and do not have to fear being killed by the hosts. But things begin to go awry when an update from within the programming division causes the hosts to question the nature of their reality.

There are a whole lot of questions to ask like, who is The Man In Black (Ed Harris)? Where exactly is Westworld? What was the “critical failure” that occurred 30 years ago?
