John Wick Chapter 2 header

For a guy who says he is out of the game, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) certainly has a hard time grasping the concept of retirement. Which is a good thing for us, especially if you were a fan of the first film. Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have released the first trailer today for John Wick: Chapter 2 at the New York Comic-Con. The first film, 2014’s John Wick, was very ambitious but caught everyone’s attention because of the visually appealing stylized action, and now it looks like returning director Chad Stahelski is turning it up in the sequel that will see the title character doing so much more than kick ass in a tailored suit.

Check out the trailer below.

The sequel will be a solo feature from Stahelski, as he is without his John Wick co-director David Leitch. But that doesn’t seem to have a glaring effect as the vision and tone of the original are still there for the sequel. It also doesn’t hurt that Derek Kolstad is also returning to write the follow-up.

But what made the first John Wick so much fun, aside from the crazy fun action sequences, is that the title character was seeking revenge for a punk kid killing his dog, which was a gift from his dying wife. Hard to imagine that anyone would let that go, especially if they are dog lovers – such as myself. But Wick isn’t motivated by the death of his dog this time around; instead, he is drawn back into the world of assassins when a former associate plots to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Everything about this trailer has us excited for the release. Even Lance Reddick as Charon, a concierge at The Continental Hotel, says “How good it’s to see you again, so soon.” Indeed.

There are other familiar nods to the first film that make its way back into the sequel. There is his mustang and the Continential hotel where his fellow assassins like to blow off steam. Ian McShane and John Leguizamo also return to reprise their respective roles.

Newcomers include Common, Riccardo Scamarcio, Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, Bridget Moynahan, Lance Reddick, and Franco Nero.

We also got a poster that tells us that every killer out there is targeting John Wick.

John Wick: Chapter 2 opens in theaters on February 10, 2017.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Keanu Reeves returns in the sequel to the 2014 hit as legendary hitman John Wick who is forced to back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers.
