Rogue One A Star Wars Story Poster Header Image

Following the release of the final poster for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney has unveiled the final trailer for the highly anticipated film. The story follows a band of rebels, led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) as they attempt to steal the plans to the Death Star. Based on the look of the poster alone, one could say that this will be a very diverse film lead by a strong female character.

As previous trailers have suggested, the first Star Wars spinoff will bring a ground-war perspective to the franchise. Now this latest trailer reinforces that notion. Check it out below.

This trailer has a whole lot of new footage to sift through. In it, we get to see that it was the Empire forcefully Jyn’s father away that made her an orphan, and that her rescue was no accident. We also finally get to hear how the title of the film came to be, because it would either be a call sign or the name of the mission. We also get to hear Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) speak for the first time. And Darth Vader makes another shadowy appearance.

Despite how exciting the trailer looks, there is still some worry that the film could fall short of expectations. Earlier this year there were reports that studio execs were unhappy with the film’s tone. Reshoots are just a part of the blockbuster filmmaking process, and during the course of five-weeks, the studio was able to address some of the film’s major narrative issues while also bringing in Tony Gilroy to polish the script.

Just a few weeks ago, Disney CEO Bobi Iger said that he wasn’t fully confident that Rogue One could be as successful as The Force Awakens, calling the spinoff an experiment of sorts. However, judging by the trailer, it looks like this is exactly the kind of film that should do more than hold us over until Episode VII hits theaters next year.

It remains to be seen if the experiment will be a success. Reactions from diehard fans tell us that the film will be a success in their eyes. And the fact that director Gareth Edwards is bringing a “ground-war perspective” is a bit refreshing to the franchise that has always put the Jedi at the center of attention.

The rest of the Rebel crew are played by Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker. Mendelsohn plays the ambitious Orson Krennic, the Director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial Military, who is looking to impress the Emperor while avoiding “the wrath of his black-masked enforcer.” Mads Mikkelsen will play Jyn’s father, who also happens to be science officer with knowledge of the Death Star.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16, 2016.
