Sing trailer header

Universal has released the final trailer for Illumination Entertainment’s Sing.

From the writer/director Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, the film is the sixth animation feature from the studio and features the voice talents of Academy Award winners Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, alongside Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton, and Grammy Award-nominated Tori Kelly. Check out the new trailer below.

At first, I really didn’t think another anthropomorphic animal animated feature could work, especially since it would be following Disney’s smash hit, Zootopia. Illumination’s upcoming film would also be following their own The Secret Life Of Pets, which grossed $319.5 million over the summer. So while the bar is pretty high, Sing looks (and more importantly sounds) like it is in an entirely different class.

The use of popular Billboard chart-topping songs to reach out to audiences of all ages is a common trope in a musically based animated film like this, and their cues should be a small tip as to where the film will be going. As we’ve seen in previous trailers, we will be hearing songs like Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Crazy Town’s “Butterfly,” Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose,” Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda,” and much, much more.

The films centers on Buster Moon (McConaughey), a koala who tries to save his dying theater with a singing competition, where talents of all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life try to achieve their dreams, hence why you hear Eminem’s fittingly appropriate “Sing For the Moment,” which samples from Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” A perfect song for a trailer that sets our expectations pretty high.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (McConaughey), a dapper koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Buster is an eternal””some might even say delusional””optimist who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Now faced with the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Five lead contestants emerge: Mike (MacFarlane), a mouse who croons as smoothly as he cons; Meena (Kelly), a timid teenage elephant with an enormous case of stage fright; Rosita (Witherspoon), an overtaxed mother run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets; Johnny (Egerton), a young gangster gorilla looking to break free of his family’s felonies; and Ash (Johansson), a punk-rock porcupine struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo.

Each arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life. And as Buster coaches each of his contestants closer and closer to the grand finale, he starts to learn that maybe the theater isn’t the only thing that is in need of saving.

Featuring more than 65 hit songs, Sing opens in theaters on December 21, 2016.
