Last week on Gotham, we saw Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis) go completely to the dark side on Alice Tetch’s “crazy” blood, but not before trying to recruit Jim (Ben McKenzie) on his dark vigilante kick. When that didn’t work, he tried to frame him for a murder. When that didn’t work he tried to kill him, but Bullock (Donal Logue) got to him just in time, thanks to Lee (Morena Baccharin). Bruce, Ivy, and Selina (David Mazouz, Maggie Geha, Camren Bicondova) get caught up in something quite deadly. Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) thought he knew who killed Isabella (Chelsea Spack).

Spoilers below.

Gotham 3.10 “Mad City: Time Bomb” review: Lee and Mario (James Carpinello) have a nice pre-rehearsal dinner. As the car gets pulled around, it explodes. Falcone (John Doman) gives Jim one day to find the culprit before he steps in to do it his way.

Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) meets with the 5 families, when Barbara (Erin Richards) slinks in and pulls a gun on Penguin. She can’t find Tabitha and Butch. She leaves but comes back to bribe the maid, which leads her to whip a clerk in a bondage shop. Barbara always gets her way.

Nygma is busy torturing the missing couple, despite the fact that Butch has no clue who Isabella even is.

Bullock is acting captain. It’s so sad about Barnes.

Bruce is mad at Selina for saying they weren’t together, but she wants to be just “us.” They realize the key belongs to the Court of Owls. Ivy puts Alfred (Sean Pertwee) under her spell to escape, and is captured 3 seconds later. The group hunting them are rebelling against the court, and Bruce wants to join them, despite the promise he made to leave everything alone. This won’t end well. The Court of Owls may be a little too mysterious, as I cannot figure after all this time what the end game is. There is such a thing as a little too much mystery, so I really hope they reveal something more soon.

Jim finds out that the target is Mario. Jim saves him, but something doesn’t add up. He goes to talk to Falcone, but gets a call. Mario fled.

Nygma gives Tabitha an impossible choice. Her hand for Butch’s life. It doesn’t seem like she cares that much for him, but then Butch… our Butch gives this soft speech with the perfect words.

“You’re sweet,” and off with her hand by mini-guillotine, as Nygma realizes that Butch really didn’t kill Isabella. He did not know the right details. Barbara storms in and the trio heads for the hospital. Barbara realizes who really did kill her, and is full of glee at the thought of how to take all the power with that information.

“I’m tired of sitting at the kid’s table.” Barbara knows Penguin’s secret. Will she blackmail Penguin? Or just go to Nygma and watch them destroy each other? We won’t be waiting long for that answer! I am slightly disappointed that Nygma hasn’t figured out Penguin yet, but perhaps he really is too close and the answer too obvious for Nygma to see.

This was an episode about love and loss. Drew Powell and Erin Richards were the absolute stars for me. This was a very good episode. It didn’t quite get up to the level as last week’s Barnes-centric episode, but it moved the Nygma/Penguin story along. Plus… mini-guillotine.

Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.
