Forest Whitaker in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Eagle-eyed Star Wars Rebels fans were able to point out some of the cameos that were made in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. From The Ghost, the show’s flagship transporter, to Chopper, the crew’s droid with an attitude, it was fun to see that even the animated show characters get a little nod. Now it looks like one of them will be paying a visit to the animated show. Rumors started to swirl that Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) could appear in a sequel or another Star Wars film. It’s unlikely that Jyn would make an appearance unless the writers have something else up their sleeve, but one character that is confirmed to appear is one we’ve already seen in the Clone Wars animated series.

According to a trailer, Saw Gerrera will be back for an upcoming episode of Star Wars Rebels, and he will be voiced by none other than Forest Whitaker. Check out more on the story below.

Set before the events of Rogue One, Saw will make his debut in a two-part episode of Star Wars Rebels titled “Ghosts of Geonosis,” premiering Saturday, January 7 at 8:30-9:30 p.m. EST on Disney XD. Here’s what creator and executive producer Dave Filoni had to say:

“It’s an incredible honor to have Forest Whitaker play Saw in ‘Rebels.’ Forest did a great job at capturing Saw in a way that is a bit mad, a bit crazed, a bit afraid, but also a bit sympathetic. He sees something coming, but no one will take action before it’s too late.”

Saw made his official Star Wars appearance in the Clone Wars animated series. Created by George Lucas, Saw is a guerrilla fighter for his home planet and received training from Jedi masters like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano. He is often seen as one of the pioneers of the Rebel Alliance.

This only adds to the history of Star Wars by explaining what Saw has done in between Clone Wars and the first two seasons of Rebels. Hopefully, these two episodes will explain why the rebels treated him as a hostile outcast. Rogue One audiences also learned that he raised Jyn after Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) killed her mother and forced her father, Galen Erso (Mad Mikkelson) to work for the Empire to build the Death Star. We also learned that she harbors some deep resentment towards him for leaving her during an assault by the Empire.

It’s still not clear how far back Rebels takes place from Rogue One, but the two upcoming episodes should help establish that timeline. One thing is for sure, Saw looks a lot younger (even for an animated character) in the video below. At least that gives us a small hint of when it could take place.
