I am always down for a giant monster movie. Even when it’s an incredibly strange giant monster movie.
We first heard about Colossal starring Anne Hathawayback in 2015, when it was described as Godzilla and Transformers meets one of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze’s collaborations, Adaptation and Being John Malkovich.
Now the first teaser trailer for Colossal has been released, and it looks to live up to those comparisons. In it a monster is wreaking havoc on Seoul, South Korea, but as it turns out, that monster is somehow being controlled by Hathaway’s character. You can see how that wacky description looks in the trailer below!
Here’s an official synopsis for the movie:
After Gloria (Anne Hathaway) loses her job and is kicked out of her boyfriend’s apartment, she leaves her life in New York and move back to her hometown. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
Colossal is directed by Nacho Vigalondo, whose previous directing credits include the time travel thriller Timecrimes, The ABCs of Death segment “A Is for Apocalypse,” Open Windows, and the V/H/S: Viral segment “Parallel Monsters.”
Speaking about the movie when it was first announced, Vigalondo said:
“Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one. Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations.”
Starring along with Hathaway is Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell, and Tim Blake Nelson.
The movie is the first release by NEON, a new company from the Alamo Drafthouse’s Tim League and RADiUS-TWC’s Tom Quinn.
Colossal will be screening at Sundance Film Festival, which just kicked off, and is set for a release on April 7th.
