The number of directors for the first season of the Netflix series Stranger Things was limited to three people. The Duffer Brothers helmed six of the eight episodes, while Shawn Levy was behind the lens for two. Since the show caught fire last year, it comes as no surprise that other creative filmmakers would want to direct an episode or two in Season 2. One of those people will be Pixar’s very own Andrew Stanton, the director of Disney’s Finding Nemo, Wall-E, Finding Dory, and the underrated John Carter.
Meanwhile, The Duffer Brothers discussed why they needed to change some of the episodes for Season 2. Because apparently the internet is way too smart and have discovered some connections. Check out more on these stories here below.
EW has reported on both stories. They revealed Stanton would be directing episodes 5 and 6, titled “The Storm” and “The Pollywog,” respectively. It seems the Finding Dory director didn’t need to convince Levy to climb aboard Season 2:
“Andrew called me out of the blue and said, “˜I love it. I would be honored to be part of it.'”
Sure, Levy made it sound very easy, but Stanton has some major Disney and Pixar credentials under his belt. This wouldn’t be the first time that Stanton has directed live-action material. He helmed the underrated space opera, John Carter.
As for who will direct the remaining episodes of the season, Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children) will direct episode 7, while The Duffer Brothers will helm episodes 1, 2, 8, and 9. That leaves Levy to do 3 and 4.
Moving on to the decision to change the titles. When Netflix released the teaser announcing Stranger Things Season 2, it was accompanied by nine titles: “MadMax,” “The Boy Who Came Back To Life,” “The Pumpkin Patch,” “The Palace,” “The Storm,” “The Pollywog,” “The Secret Cabin,” “The Brian,” and “The Lost Brother.” Of course these titles are obvious nods and references to 80s pop culture. And as it turns out, the Internet figured out there was a more meaningful connection to these titles. This, of course, forced the Duffer Brothers to change things around:
“Some of them are changing,” admits Matt Duffer of the episode titles. “Some of them we didn’t put because these people are smart on the f””ing internet. You’ve seen it with Westworld “” they figured it out! I’ve seen videos analyzing the chapter titles and they’re right on a lot.”
It remains to be seen which of these titles will be changed, and how much of an impact it will have on Season 2. Yes, they can be just a title at first glance, but as we’ve all learned, they are more than just a mere title.
Netflix will release all nine episode of Stranger Things Season 2 on Halloween.
