Disney Interested In Rebooting ‘Tron’ With Jared Leto As The Lead

Suicide Squad Jared Leto as The Joker header image - Tron reboot

There has been an interesting number of developments surrounding Tron lately. Most recently, Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski revealed that had Disney followed up with Tron 3, the film would have been an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out, with the first act taking place in the real world, followed by the second act which would have been set in Tron (or multiple worlds), before ending it all in the real world.

While the film has been on hold, it looks like the studio may be interested in reviving the franchise once more, and this time with a new lead. According to new reports, Suicide Squad star Jared Leto is being eyed for the lead role. More on the story below.

THR says that this Tron would not be a direct sequel to Tron 3. It will, however, use certain elements from the Tron 3 screenplay as a foundation for the upcoming film. Based on their report, Leto would play a character named Ares, “who has not appeared on screen before but was a key player in that script.”

As for what some of those plot points are, here’s what Kosinsky told Collider earlier this week:

The movie was called, “TRON: Ascension”, I think that’s out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a “Stranger in a Strange Land,” trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.

It would be a bit disappointing to see Tron: Legacy left open-ended. After all, Quorra did escape into the real world, so I’d like to see how she would react to her new surroundings. I would imagine that if they were to use certain plot elements from the Tron 3 script, Ares would be in place of Quorra. But that is just speculation.

The film doesn’t have a director or writer as of yet, but Tron: Legacy and Oblivion executive producer Justin Springer will produce. It should be interesting to see if Springer will bring Kosinsky back considering that the two have collaborated on Tron: Legacy and Oblivion. No word yet on if any offers have been made. Leto and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also be involved if they are able to ink a deal.

Tron, starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, was first released in 1982. While it wasn’t a box office hit, the film managed to gain a cult following thanks in part to the visual effects, which were considered the best at the time. In 2010, Disney released a sequel, Tron: Legacy starring Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Again, the film did not meet box office expectations, but it did however push the envelope on visuals and had a killer soundtrack from Daft Punk.

Since then, a new Tron sequel has failed to see production. In fact, Disney killed any hopes of one in 2015. However, a reboot may just be what the franchise needs.

We’ll keep you posted as soon as more developments come in, that is if they come in.
