‘Deadpool 2’ Now Courting Michael Shannon To Play Cable

Michael Shannon might join Deadpool 2

The search for the actor to play Cable in Deadpool 2 is still on. Apparently, the list that the title character gave during the end credits wasn’t good enough. Based on previous reports, the actors currently being eyed are just as good. A couple of weeks ago, David Harbour tested for the role, while Kyle Chandler was rumored. Stephen Lang threw his own name into the hat. Michael Shannon (Zod in Man Of Steel) was also being looked at, but scheduling issues would prevent him from taking the role. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case any longer.

According to new reports, Shannon is now one of the frontrunners to play Cable. More on the story below.

THR is following up Collider’s original report on the cast. The latter said Shannon was in the mix, but couldn’t take the role due to scheduling conflicts. However, THR has jumped to the front of the list. Harbour is also still in contention. Chandler, however, was actually never in the running.

Cable probably has the most complex backstory in the X-Men history. Which seems fitting for a film franchise that has a convoluted chronology that is chock full of continuity errors and time-travel changes. Known as Nathan Summers, Cable is the adult son of Cyclops (Scott Summers) and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey’s clone), and the half brother of Rachel Summers. He was sent into a future timeline where he had futuristic tech integrated into him and often traveled to the present time to reset history or prevent further harm to his time.

In the comics, he was often paired with Deadpool where the two couldn’t be more polar opposites. Deadpool, the Merc with the Mouth, has a tendency to be very chatty during his violent exchanges, for which he finds joyous and fun. While Cable is calm and collected. Considering he knows what the future holds, Cable tries to fight for a better world.

Though the Man Of Steel actor is best known for his more dramatic roles in films like Nocturnal Animals, Mud, Take Shelter, Midnight Special, and Loving, and his role in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, he’s also had a few comedic roles, but through Funny or Die shorts. But that does not take away from the fact that he can be funny. So it should be interesting to see who director David Leitch goes with.
