Hulu has officially ordered a pilot episode for a potential new TV series adaptation of the Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez comic book series Locke & Key. We found out almost a year ago that a new adaptation was being developed, which followed a failed movie adaptation and another TV series attempt at FOX, which got as far as a pilot episode being produced before they decided not to pursue it any further.

This latest attempt to adapt the comic is looking promising so far. It received plenty of interest from multiple networks before Hulu landed it. And not only have they ordered a pilot episode, but LOST and The Strain showrunner Carlton Cuse is set for the same position should it go to series, and they’ve lined up Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson to direct the pilot.

The current adaptation was developed by Cuse and Hill, with the latter penning a spec script. The script was then sent to Derrickson—the only director it was sent to, according to the report—who joined the project right away. In fact, if Hulu does order it to series, Derrickson is expected to remain involved and direct more episodes of the first season.

Here’s a description of Locke & Key from Amazon:

Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them… and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all!

When Nina Locke brings her children back to their father’s childhood home following his gruesome murder, everyone is too absorbed by their grief to notice that all in Keyhouse is not what it seems. Everyone except youngest son Bode, who quickly finds a new friend living in an empty well and a new toy that offers hours of spirited entertainment. But again, all in Keyhouse is not what it seems, and soon horrors old and new, real and imagined, will come ravening after the Lockes and the secrets their family holds.

In addition to Doctor Strange, Derrickson has also written and directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Deliver Us from Evil. If all goes well with Locke & Key and he does end up directing multiple episodes, he could begin working on Doctor Strange 2 for Marvel after the first season is complete.

Cuse is also the creator, writer, and executive producer of Colony, Bates Motel, and the upcoming Jack Ryan series. He’s worked on movie screenplays as well, including San Andreas and the upcoming Rampage.

Hill’s other works include The Fireman, Heart-Shaped Box, and Horns.
