Unbreakable starring Samuel L. Jackson

M. Night Shyamalan is having one hell of a career resurgence. From The Visit all the way to this year’s Split, audiences have grown to love the filmmaker’s recent directorial efforts.

Now he has announced Glass, as his newest project. But there is something special about this new title. It will be a sequel to both Split and Unbreakable. More on the story below. And minor spoilers will follow.

Shyamalan made the announcement on his official Twitter account.

Here’s what he had to say just in case you can’t read his Tweets.

“Okay. Here we go. Finished the new script. It’s taken 17 years but I can finally answer the #1 question I get, “Are you making a f#&@ing sequel to Unbreakable or what?” My new film is the sequel to #Unbreakable AND #Split. It was always my dream to have both films collide in this third film.

The iconic Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn. The incomparable @SamuelLJackson will return as Elijah Price/Mr. Glass. The virtuoso #JamesMcAvoy returns as Kevin Wendell Crumb, Patricia, Dennis, Hedwig, Barry, Jade, Orwell, The Beast, Heinrich, Norma, Pol-. And the prodigy, @AnyaTaylorJoy will return as Casey Cooke. I’m reteaming with my partners @jason_blum and @Universalpics for this crazy comic book thriller.

And the film is called GLASS”¦

Universal Pictures will release #Glass on January 18, 2019 all over the world. How’s that for not keeping a secret!”

Well, there you have it, folks. The events of Unbreakable and Split will all culminate to Glass. Seems like a fitting title when you pair the two together. Unbreakable Glass/Split Glass. But I digress. It’s been a long time waiting for Unbreakable fans who have waited a little over a decade and a half to get a sequel.

As for that connection to Split. Well, here’s where that spoiler starts to kick in, so you haven’t seen split yet, you should probably stop reading this, you were forewarned already. So I’ll give you one last chance to stop reading.

Okay, at the end of Split, it is revealed that both it and Unbreakable take place within the same universe. The film acknowledges the events when it makes a reference to a terrorist attack that took place 15 years ago, and has David Dunn (Bruce Willis) reminding the person that the terrorist’s name was Mr. Glass.

Based on Shyamalan’s tweets, Glass was part of his grand master plan to bring the films together. Now that it has been confirmed, it should be interesting to see how all of this ties together and if the payoff will be worth it.

Here’s a very early plot description.

Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

Glass opens in theaters on January 18, 2019.
