‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Star Cliff Curtis Joins James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Sequels

Cliff Curtis

There’s a bunch of Avatar sequels on the way. Eventually. We’ve been hearing about a sequel to Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day director James Cameron‘s record-smasher for years, but the second movie has been delayed multiple times.

Creeping up on a decade since the original was released, the sequels are starting to take shape once again. Last month, release dates for the four sequels were set again, with the first now scheduled for release in 2020—11 years after the original was released. And now a new actor has joined the cast. Fear the Walking Dead star Cliff Curtis has signed on for one of the lead roles in the sequels.

The report says that Curtis will play the leader of the Metkayina reef people clan, named Tonowari. He joins original stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, who signed on to reprise their roles a few years back.

Cameron’s plan is to film each of the sequels as standalone movies, while also combining them to create a saga. Working on the screenplays for the sequel with Cameron is Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), the team of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Armageddon, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem).

The current release dates for the Avatar sequels are as follows: Avatar 2 is scheduled for a December 18, 2020, followed by Avatar 3 one year later on December 17, 2021. At this point we have a three-year break before Avatar 4 arrives on December 20, 2024. Finally, when we’re all old and grey, Avatar 5 will be released on December 19, 2025.

Avatar was the all-time box office king for many years, having unseated the long-reigning former king, Cameron’s Titanic. Its record as the all-time domestic champ was broken with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. That said, Avatar still owns the all-time worldwide box office record, having made nearly $2.8 billion around the globe. Titanic still holds second with $2.1 billion, and The Force Awakens is third with just over $2 billion.
