At San Diego Comic-Con, following a rousing trailer, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, title star Chadwick Boseman, and fellow co-stars Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Forest Whitaker, Daniel Kaluuya, and Letitia Wright took the stage. While a trailer was released a few weeks ago, the cast and directors were on hand to talk a little bit about the film.
More on the story from SDCC 2017 below.
It was confirmed that Black Panther would take place a few months after the events of Captain America: Civil War. So it should be interesting to see if there will be any overlap with Spider-Man: Homecoming. A major plot point of the film would see T’Challa still mourning the loss of his father, and how he must learn to be king. However, he doesn’t really have that much time now that Wakanda is in turmoil when a new danger appears. While T’Challa has this incredible Vibranium suit, Coogler says that T’Challa’s power comes from the people and his family history.
Coogler talked about how he didn’t care what color his superheroes were, but that has he got older, he wanted to see more heroes who were like him. Enter Black Panther.
The panel then reiterates some of the things that we have learned about these characters in previous reports. Wright’s character provides the technological advances in the film.
Gurira, she had to learn a whole new set of fighting skills which were different from killing zombies on the set of The Walking Dead.
Okoye’s character’s goals to protect Wakanda’s technology from falling into the wrong hands. But Erik Killmonger (played by Jordan) sees wants to rule Wakanda in his own image. Nyong’o plays a spy who is sent out into the world and reports back what she has learned. Serkis commented on how excited he was to play a character who gets his arm back. Of course, he is till up to his arms dealing tricks and he wheels and deals with various governments.
Duke says Man-Ape is not a person to be trifled with, and proclaims that his tribe is the best in Wakanda, to which his fellow panelists disagreed.
The following clip saw T’Challa, Nakia, and Okoye enter a casino. They are there to watch Klaue (with a new robotic arm) and Everett Ross. There is a deal going down that sees Klaue exchange Vibranium for diamonds. Okoye then whips out her staff and starts a fight. Klaue tries to shoot T’Challa, but realizes his gun his empty. Despite that, he taunts the new king by saying he looks like his old man. That’s when Klaue’s arm transforms into a sonic gun, which T’Challa is able to deflect easily.
That’s when a new poster for the film appeared.
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther opens in theaters on February 16th, 2018.
