To say that Avengers: Infinity War is the most anticipated superhero film ever would be an understatement. It’s a culmination of everything that Marvel Studios has been working at for the past 10 years. It’s something that nobody thought could ever happen. Yet, here we are. Everyone’s hopes of seeing The Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man joining forces to defeat Thanos finally happening.
We got a first look at the trailer at the D23 Expo a few weeks back, and the footage was shown once more at last weekend’s SDCC. But it’s not likely that the same trailer will ever see the light of day – unless you saw the leaks. So co-director Joe Russo has offered up a vague timetable on when we could see a trailer, plus an idea of how long it could be. And believe me when I say this, it will be one of the longest MCU films. More on these stories here below.
Collider was at SDCC over the weekend where they had the chance to talk to Russo about Avengers: Infinity War‘s runtime. While there isn’t an exact number, Russo did offer an estimate:
“The current cut is over two and a half [hours]”¦ Most of it’s a movie you could show, but there’s still a lot of work left to be done, I still have a couple of scenes that we haven’t finished from Avengers 3 that I’m shooting in the next few months with my brother, and it’s certainly gonna be a film that lives in the two and a half hour, two and a half hour-plus range.”
Each of the Avengers films was a two-plus hour feature. The Avengers ran at two hours and 23 minutes, while Avengers: Age of Ultron ran at two hours and 22 minutes. But Captain America: Civil War is by far the longest MCU film to date as it runs at two hours and 28 minutes. So to say that Avengers: Infinity War will be a two-hour bout with Thanos is not completely surprising. Though it has been building up to this moment, there’s still a lot of story to flesh out.
As for when we could see a trailer, I wouldn’t bet on it happening anytime soon. Exclusive footage shown at SDCC is rarely ever made public. Some of it has to do with the fact that it was made solely for SDCC attendees, while some of it has to do with the fact that the footage is not complete and is still unpolished. But that really isn’t the case for Avengers: Infinity War as the footage we saw looked ready for everyone to see. So what’s the deal? Here’s Russo talking to ComicBook.com about it:
“You know, all I can say is that when the footage comes out we want it to be exactly right…. So we are taking our time and working on that footage because, as you can imagine, the levels of visual effects in these movies are unprecedented and there are certain things in this footage at Comic-Con that works specifically for a Comic-Con audience. But when we go wide, to a wide audience, we have to make sure that footage works for a wide audience…. So we’re hard at work on that right now. I’m not going to give a timeline on it because I want to surprise people but, you know, hopefully, they’re patient with us.”
So there you have it. It has to do more with the trailer being made for the D23 Expo and Comic-Con audiences. But everyone is still eagerly waiting to see it.
