This week sees the release of Mycroft Holmes and The Apocalypse Handbook,, which collects issues #1-5 of the Titan Comics comic book series Mycroft Holmes co-written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Yes, that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the basketball star extraordinaire.

Jabbar first ventured into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes universe back in 2015 with Mycroft Holmes, a novel he co-wrote with Anna Waterhouse. Though Sherlock’s older brother has always lived in his younger brother’s literary shadow, Jabbar’s novel shines a spotlight on his earlier, post-college years.

The Mycroft Holmes comic book miniseries launched early this year from Jabbar and co-writer Raymond Obstfeld, giving us yet another look at the young man’s early adventures, this time on a mission for Queen Victoria. A young Sherlock does make a small appearance in the story, but he never overtakes it; rather, his entry is merely to show the dynamic between the brothers. Flashbacks to their childhood do that, too, as well as reveal just how different in nature they are, even though they are both highly intelligent and perceptive.

I absolutely loved the first issue — you can read my full review here — and now that I’ve had the chance to read the entire miniseries, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. The writers give us an exciting, captivating adventure that has plenty of twists and turns. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will really enjoy this title. I hope Jabbar continues delving into this universe, because he’s doing an amazing job with it so far, and Titan has given him a great platform.

All new adventures starring Mycroft Holmes by author of the best-selling Mycroft series, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Mycroft Holmes and The Apocalypse Handbook sees the diffident, brilliant Mycroft pulled into a globe-spanning adventure at the behest of Queen Victoria and a secret organization at the heart of the British government. A madman is on the loose with civilization-destroying weapons, each two hundred years in advance of the status quo. Can the smartest man in England set aside his idle, womanizing ways for long enough to track down the foe that may be his match?

This all-new graphic novel collection presents brand new comic adventures set in the world created by the author of the best-selling Mycroft novel series, and is perfect for fans of Mycroft Holmes and Sherlock Holmes.
