Linda Hamilton Returning As Sarah Connor For New ‘Terminator’ Movie

Sarah Connor in Terminator 2

During a private event celebrating the Terminator franchise, The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day director James Cameron announced one of the stars of his two entries in the franchise, Linda Hamilton, will be returning to play Sarah Connor once again. She joins fellow returning star Arnold Schwarzenegger on the cast.

Instead of trying to continue from where other movies in the franchise—2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, 2009’s Terminator Salvation, and 2015’s Terminator Genisys—left off, this newest installment is being planned as a direct sequel to Cameron’s Judgment Day. It’s also being developed as the beginning of a new trilogy.

Going for a direct sequel to T2 makes a lot of sense. For one, this is the first time Cameron has been involved with one of the movies since the 1991 sequel. He’s not only producing, but also came up with the story it’s being built around. In addition to that, those other three movies are…not considered to be very good by most.

Speaking about bringing back Hamilton as Sarah Connor, Cameron said:

“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return.

There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.”

But the new Terminator is not just a big reunion. There will be fresh faces as well, as Cameron continued:

“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”

Sitting in the director’s chair this time around will be Tim Miller, who was behind the camera for Deadpool. According to the report, he and Cameron have also established a writer’s room to work on a trilogy of movies which can stand on their own or form a connected story arch. Names currently involved with this writer’s room include Dark Knight trilogy and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice writer David Goyer; Dark Angel (which he also co-created with Cameron), The Shield, and Dexter writer Charles Eglee; and Josh Friedman, who wrote and created the TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles and co-wrote Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds.

No word yet on where the story is heading for the next Terminator, or when we might see the movie.
