Archaia Comics: Jim Henson Tale of Sand preview image

To help celebrate the 75th anniversary of Jim Henson’s birth Archaia Entertainment debuted the first 20 pages of their upcoming graphic novel, Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, which is based on a screenplay that was written by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl.

Archaia timed the preview to coincide with search giant Google’s own home page tribute to Jim Henson, which takes the form of [...]

SDCC 2011: Tons Of Cosplay Photos From The Convention Floor

Dave3   |

SDCC 2011: Cosplay Photos: Loki

After spending three straight days cooped up in the dark expanse of Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con covering all the upcoming movie goodness, I finally was able to hit the convention floor and meet with all the awesome Attendees-in -Tights who made their way to the mega-con Mecca.

Lemme tell you, this is one of my very favorite parts of the Con. I absolutely love walking up and down convention scoping out all the convention goers festooned their super finery and saying ‘Hi, do you mind if I take your photo for Geeks of Doom.’ The reactions vary anywhere from “Huh? Where? Sure!” and “Cool, I know you guys.” to “OMG!OMG!GEEKSOFDOOM!YES!YES!… O M GGGGeee!” Overall, everyone is always so gracious and cool.

I did my best to capture a wide array of the homespun heroes who packed the convention floor. The ingenuity and uninhibitedness of cosplayers never ceases to amaze me. Some of my favorites were the Witch-King from Lord of the Rings, a sweet old-school Cylon, a super low-rent Han Solo in Carbonite, who I met on the footbridge in town, and an awesome lady Loki. Special geek props to the Father/Daughter Jedi (heartwarming) and the Oogie Boogie and Sally (spiffy!) duos.

Ooo, and right as I was heading off the main convention floor for the last time I met a dude dressed in an amazing Hawkman outfit who as it turns out had also recently written and directed a five-minute short Hawkman film which you can find here.

Anyhoo… babes and dudes in leather, latex, cardboard, and shiny-shiny to follow after the jump. Enjoy! [...]

SDDC 2011: Photos From The Convention Floor, Preview Night

Dave3   |

We GoDs took to the convention floor on Wednesday night at Comic-Con International 2011 here in San Diego, CA, for Preview night to check out the sights. Sadly, there weren’t too many cosplayers in attendance at the time, but there were a lot of cool signings and giveaways going on at every turn.

We ransacked the WB booth and came away with a haul of cool Harry Potter buttons; hit AMC’s Walking Dead booth and watched some brave convention goers willingly handcuff themselves to an Atlanta ‘rooftop’ alongside an eerily lifelike Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) statue; and stopped by the IDW booth to score a Comic-Con exclusive Locke & Key replica ‘Head’ key for our very own Henchman21 (who’s presence at here SDCC this year is sorely missed). We did stop by the Summit Entertainment booth, where each year we’ve been able to score some Twilight goodies for our readers, but just as we got to the line, they closed it down [...]

Sarcastic Gamer Playing Video Games For Charity

One of our awesome readers brought to my attention an upcoming geek-fueled fundraiser where participants will be playing video games to raise money for local Children’s hospitals. I can find no wrong in this and thought I’d pass it along to those like-minded individuals who’d appreciate this as much as I do.

New Movies This Week: Which Will You Go See? [September 17, 2010]

Dave3   |

From the Mind of M. Night Shyamalan: Devil

Teen comedy, crime drama, intense horror, romance, and an animated kid’s film. I think I just heard Keanu say “Whoa!” The Studios are offering up a veritable potpourri of cinema this weekend. It feels like an oddity to me to see such degree of diversity at the box office, but I know it’s probably not. It’s just been a while and we’re not used to it.

This has been M. Night Shyamalan week at Doom HQ as we prepare for our Flix of Doom review of Devil, along with a discussion of Shyamalan’s body of work. So that’s where my geeky ass is going to be planted at the theater this weekend.

I wanna know what movie YOU are planning to see this weekend?

New Movies This Week: Which Will You Go See? [September 3, 2010]

Dave3   |

Machete movie poster

I can think of no better way to commemorate Labor Day weekend then by seeing a movie about an American on vacation in Italy being contracted to do someone’s dirty work; a Mexican on a mission in Arizona being contracted to do someone’s dirty work; or a long distance romantic comedy… about a couple being contracted to do someone’s dirty work (please let it be about that).

Well, I have no doubt what I’m going to be seeing this weekend. Here’s a hint: Tom Savini is in it. What about you?

The three big movies of the week are: The American, Going the Distance, and Machete [...]

New Movies This Week: Which Will You Go See? [August 27, 2010]

Dave3   |

Which movie will you go see this weekend?

You know how you can tell that summer is winding down, my lovely geeks and geekettes? By looking at the movie section in the newspaper (I can hear some “What’s that?” from the peanut gallery). All the summer movies have come, most have gone, and some have even made their way back into the theater.

And with Summer’s end comes the movie studio’s last ditch effort to grab at your few remaining dollars before we all wise up and decide we need the cash for our Na’vi Halloween costumes or the sure-to-be-made-available-for-Christmas Tron-themed X-Box 360.

So, have a look at what’s in theaters this weekend and let’s discuss, shall we? [...]

Watch Now: Red Band Trailer For ‘The Exorcist’ Blu-ray Package

Dave3   |

Moments after my editor asked me to write this article about The Exorcist coming to Blu-ray I had a three-paragraph nostalgia trip spill out of my brain. It was a little too deep to waste on a release notice like this, so I’ve decided to bank that story for the time being and unleash it on you all when I actually get my geeky mitts on the Blu-ray for review.

Let’s just agree that I can’t hardly wait for that moment. Anyhoo, this upcoming 2-Disc Digibook Blu-ray package, to be released on October 5, 2010, will contain both the original 1973 theatrical release and the Y2K Director’s cut re-release, along with two feature-length documentaries, commentary tracks by both director William Friedkin and writer/producer William Peter Blatty, interviews, storyboards, and a bunch of featurette-level material and trailers.

I wanted a copy before all that jazz, so I’m already a happy camper. Check out the Red-band trailer for the Blu-ray release and a full rundown of features here after the jump [...]

SDCC 2010: Preview Night Video Blog

Greetings all!

The Geeks of Doom crew is here in San Diego, CA, for the 2010 Comic-Con, and it’s been a blast so far. Crazy, exhausting, overwhelming, but also amazing and fun.

Below is a video blog that Dave3, Guy Jen, and Henchman21 did on Wednesday night about their reactions to the Con’s Preview Night (I was working the camera).

SDCC 2010: We’re Heeeeeeere!

Dave3   |

What Ho! Doomers,

The time of year is upon us whence thousands and thousands of comic, movie, and video game fanatics descend upon the quaint city of San Diego to create a glorious flash-mob oasis of mass Geekdom. It’s 2010 Comic Con International, my peoples! This year’s convention is set to bring tons of Grade A geeky goodness to the world—from the likes of Radical, D.C., Disney, Dreamworks, Lionsgate, Marvel, and of course Universal’s upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which looks to be in tight competition with Tron Legacy for the largest advertising presence on the streets of San Diego.

The Geeks of Doom are here en masse and ready to kick Comic-Con’s A-Double-S. Reporting on location from our ad hoc Doom HQ (read: the Residence Inn, Gaslamp Quarter) with @henchman21, @eveofdoom, @guy_jen, @tched, and me, (@geeksofdoom), we’ll be bringing you the SDCC news from the panels and show floor as it happens. Also, we have a super special guest writer on hand this year (I’m so excited!) contributing his discerning opinion with exclusive daily wrap-ups from the ‘Con floor—the awesome & infamous @MrBabyMan! We’ll also be recording some special SDCC editions of our Doomcasts (@ComicsofDoom & @FlixofDoom) while we’re here to discuss and decompress from what’s sure to be a mass of sensory overload [...]

In Honor Of Ronnie James Dio: ‘Horns’

Dave3   |

The creation of this image was suggested to me by a friend via Twitter, and I immediately thought ‘Horns’ and got to work making it happen.

I created ‘Horns’ to honor of one of the most inspiring people in my life and the lives of many of my friends, the Godfather of Heavy Metal — Ronnie James Dio, who passed away yesterday.

Dio’s bold music scored such a large part of the backdrop of my youth that I can rarely think of good times without thinking of him (Look Out!!).

I was lucky enough to have seen him perform in concert more times than I can rightfully put a number to and I gotta tell ya, every single time I saw him he made that concert seem like the ‘best’ performance of his career [...]

Contest: ‘Super Spy, Vol 2: The Lost Dossiers’ Prize Pack!

Dave3   |

I received a super-secret coded message from my contact at the ‘Awesome’ department over at Top Shelf today. So, I busted out my Super Spy Decoder ring and went to work translating the mysterious missive. Contained therein will be three (3) copies of Super Spy, Vol 2: The Lost Dossiers, three (3) original pieces of artwork from Matt Kindt (I suspect this artwork will contain coded instructions regarding your mission), and three (3) bottles of Super Spy ‘Cyanide’ capsules (for use should your mission fail… so, do not fail).

Star Wars Lego Cool Their Heels on Hoth

Dave3   |

Flickr user Avanaut brings new meaning to the term cool with this inventive Lego on Hoth photo set.

This particular photo set resonates deep down to my geeky core, as I played many a long, frostbitten day out on the snowy tundra of ‘Hoth’ (by way of Brooklyn, NY) as a kid, IG-88 & Darth Vader figures in hand and Han Solo in my heart. The set is enhanced by Avanaut’s decently witty titles and captions, and the random insertion of one Dr. Henry Jones. Per his recommendation I encourage you to use the ‘view on white/black’ option when looking at each photo for maximum immersion and enjoyment [...]

His commitment to all things geek is beyond reproach.
