The Walking Dead Chronicles: The Official Companion Book
Paperback
Written by Paul Ruditis
Abrams Books
Release date: October 1, 2011
The Walking Dead Chronicles: The Official Companion Book is, as the title would indicate, the official behind-the-scenes book for The Walking Dead. Almost every popular TV or movie (especially those based on comics or sci-fi properties) gets one of these. I’m sure you’ve seen these before. They’re usually filled with interviews, pictures, and inside information about the production of whatever property the book is talking about. This one is no different, and will be a book worth buying if you really like The Walking Dead, but won’t be of much interest to non-fans [...]

Brian Azzarello. Eduardo Risso. These are two comic creators whose names create instant excitement when attached to a new project, especially when they are on the same book, as they are with their new series from DC/Vertigo, which launches this week with Spaceman #1. Azzarello and Risso are the team that brought us a landmark run with their series 100 Bullets. They were also the team for possibly the best thing to come out of DC’s Flashpoint event, with their Batman: Knight of Vengeance mini-series. So, when they start a new project, it’s easy to get me and many other comics fans excited. It’s a good thing then that Spaceman is very good, because you do not want to see a bunch of fanboys get pissed off when things don’t live up to their expectations [...]

 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 17th, 2011 at 10:33 am |

New York Comic-Con 2011 saw the premiere of the first episode of the all-new Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Geeks of Doom was there to watch it. The show will launch on November 11th on Cartoon Network with the one-hour episode that was shown. The animated series will then take a bit of a break before returning to Cartoon Network in the spring as part of the DC Nation block of programming.
The series is produced by animation legend Bruce Timm, but according to Timm, is not a part of the unofficial “Timm-verse” which includes shows such as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman, and Justice League. During the panel, Timm remarked that some fans had attempted to link the universes together, but he wasn’t really buying it [...]

Saturday at New York Comic-Con 2011 saw the first public screening of the first episode of the new Green Lantern: The Animated Series. We will have a full run down of the first episode later, but first we will show you the first scene, which DC/Warner Bros has released to the public.
Watch the opening scene here below.
This is just a taste of the series, but I can tell you that the rest of the episode followed in both art style and in the brutality of the action [...]

 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 13th, 2011 at 4:38 pm |

IDW Publishing will be bringing back their Infestation series, with the aptly named Infestation 2. The first Infestation dealt with a zombie invasion attacking some of IDW’s most popular licensed properties such as GI Joe, Transformers, Ghostbusters, and Star Trek. This time around, it’s not zombies, it’s Lovecraftian “Old Ones” gods attacking from across time and space [...]

Totally Rad Show, Diggnation, and former Screen Savers host Alex Albrecht is a man of many talents, director of films among them.
Today, he dropped a short film on YouTube titled Voltron: The End. The short features an older Lance (played by Timothy Omundson, who plays Detective Lassiter on the USA series Psych), pilot of the Red Lion, recovering from an accident. It is short, but sweet and a total treat for Voltron fans.

Comic Review: The Cape #2 (of 4)
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 12th, 2011 at 8:25 pm |

The Cape #2 (of 4)
Written by Jason Ciaramella
Inspired by a Short Story by Joe Hill
Art by Zach Howard
Colors by Nelson Daniel
Letters by Shawn Lee
IDW Publishing
Released October 12, 2011
Price: $3.99
There are a lot of comics out right now that deal with fantastic people with amazing powers who are, well, kind of jerks. The Cape #2 (of 4) for IDW Publishing is another one of these books, and it is also one seriously messed up comic. I mean, there is some really freaky stuff going on in this book. And you know what? I don’t have a problem with that because it is one well done comic. How The Cape sets itself apart from books like Irredeemable is that while it has some superhero elements, it is more of a grounded story with normal characters and a situation that many can identify with [...]

The GoD List: Comics For October 12, 2011
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 12th, 2011 at 12:07 pm |

Each and every week “The Spider” Henchman21 and “The Microwave” MK2FAC3 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 12, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.
The ‘Wave is busy traveling to New York Comic-Con, so he’s a little preoccupied this week, what with packing his Batman costume and making sure he has enough Batarangs with him so he can fight crime on the streets of the real Gotham city, so it’s just your friendly neighborhood Henchman this week (I’m already stationed here in NYC for the week). “Wavey Gravy” does want to make sure you know about The All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold #12, out this week featuring a team-up with Zatanna. Because it wouldn’t be a GoD list without MK talking about a Batman comic. Here are a few books I am looking forward to this week [...]

Watch Now: ‘Dragon Age: Redemption’ Episode 1
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 11th, 2011 at 6:35 pm |

Today marks the release of the first episode of Dragon Age: Redemption, a new web series based on the popular BioWare video game series.
The series stars Felicia Day (The Guild) and Doug Jones (Hellboy) and is produced by Day’s own production company, Knight of Good. The series focuses on Tallis (Day), an elf working for the Qunari, one of the groups in the fictional world of Dragon Age. She is tasked to track down Saarebas (Jones) a renegade mage of the Qunari who has escaped prison. But why am I telling you about it when you should just be watching it yourself.
Continue reading to see the video now.
Day and company have done a great job with this project, which makes sense, what with Day working for years on her own series, The Guild. They are the perfect company to handle this kind of web-series and judging from this first episode, they got it right. New episodes will launch each Tuesday, so make sure you subscribe to Machinima.com YouTube channel. [...]

Comic Review: Fear Agent #31
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 5th, 2011 at 2:17 pm |

Fear Agent #31
Out of Step Part 4 (of 5)
Written by Rick Remender
Pencils by Mike Hawthorne, Tony Moore
Finishes by John Lucas
Colors by Lee Loughridge
Letters by Rus Wooten
Cover by Tony Moore
Dark Horse Comics
Released October 5th, 2011
Price: $3.50
Fear Agent has always been a series that I think would appeal to a lot of Geeks of Doom readers who maybe don’t read comics. It doesn’t deal with any of the standard superhero tropes of other comics, instead focusing on sci-fi action with smart writing and excellent art. Fear Agent has been chugging along for a few years, and is coming to an end next issue (at least for a while), so it is amazing to see that Fear Agent #31, part four of the Out of Step mini-series, is the best issue of the series so far [...]

American Horror Story: Delicious Dill Recipe
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 5th, 2011 at 12:03 pm |

If you’re reading Geeks of Doom, which you should be because it’s great [*shameless plug*], you may have seen an article a couple of weeks back about a wedding cake sent to Doom HQ’s to promote an upcoming show on FX, titled American Horror Story, the first episode of which airs tonight.
In that article, there’s a link to the show’s site where you can sign up to get free stuff and stuff. Well, I did sign up, and while I didn’t get a badass cake sent to me, I did get an email with a couple of pictures, one of which was a recipe for Delicious Dills (subtitled “No Friends like the old!”), so what the hell, it’s perfect for me and my Cooking Corner collection! [...]

‘Spider-Man: Edge of Time’ Out in Stores, Watch the Launch Trailer
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | October 5th, 2011 at 12:05 am |

Wow. Apparently September/October has become the time for video game companies to release any game connected with a superhero franchise. Last week saw the release of X-Men: Destiny, Batman: Arkham City will be out in a couple of weeks, and this week sees the release of Spider-Man: Edge of Time. This new game from Activision/Beenox, the makers of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, allows players to play as the Amazing Spider-Man in the present day, as well as his 2099 counterpart in an adventure to stop the death of the web-slinger [...]

The comic world lost an amazing artist and friend on Monday with the passing of Minck Oosterveer, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident. Oosterveer was the artist on two books from BOOM! Studios: The Unknown and The Unknown: Devil Made Flesh (both series written by former BOOM! Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid). To honor the life and work of Oosterveer, BOOM is offering both series as free downloads though all of their digital partners [...]

Comics Review: B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Russia #1 of 5
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | September 21st, 2011 at 2:08 pm |

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Russia #1 of 5
Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi
Art by Tyler Crook
Letters by Clem Robins
Covers by Dave Johnson
Dark Horse Comics
Release date: September 21, 2011
Price: $3.50
I’ve read plenty of Hellboy stories before, but no actual B.P.R.D. comics before, so I was excited to dive into the B.P.R.D. part of the Hellboy universe, which is exactly what I have done with B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Russia #1 (of 5). I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to follow the story or would get lost within it. The main reason I haven’t read any B.P.R.D. before is that even though I knew where to start, I was intimidated by the amount of stories that are out there. As it turns out, I didn’t have worry.
The most impressive thing about this issue was the accessibility of it. I was aware of a lot of the cast, whether from the Hellboy comics I have read, or from the movies or from just hearing about the characters from other comics fans. The recap page did a great job of catching me up to speed, and the story just took off from there and explained anything else I needed to know [...]

DC Releases Sales Numbers For ‘Justice League #1′ and They Are Good
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | September 14th, 2011 at 11:01 am |

We knew that DC’s New 52 program would be a sales hit when it was first announced. Too many big name creators on big name characters. Too many new #1 issues which collectors can’t resist. Too much buzz surrounding even the smallest of new series. What we didn’t know was how big of a success the initiative would be, but we are now starting to get an idea.
On DC’s blog The Source, the company announced the sales numbers for Justice League #1, according to Diamond Comic Distributors, and they are pretty good to say the least. Justice League was not only the best-selling title for the month of August, but it’s also the best-selling single issue for all of 2011. The first printing run for Justice League exceeded 200,000 copies and sold out within hours of going on sale, with a second printing selling out within a day. The book is now onto its third printing, only two weeks after its original release [...]

Comic Review: Jennifer Blood #4
 |
Posted by Henchman21 | September 13th, 2011 at 3:00 pm |

Jennifer Blood #4
Written by Garth Ennis
Art by Marcos Marz, Kewber Baal
Letters by Rob Steen
Colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Covers by (A) Tim Bradstreet, (B) Jonathan Lau, (C) Ale Garza, (D) Johnny Desjardins
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: September 7, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99
Writer Garth Ennis has a history of creating characters who like to get violent from time to time, and his new series, Jennifer Blood features just such a character. Jennifer Blood is a housewife by day and a killer by night, hunting down mobsters and other criminals and dispatching them with brutal efficiency. The series has got all of Ennis’ trademark outlandish characters and some of the old ultra-violence. From what I’ve read, it seems like a fun series with tons of action.
In previous issues of the series, Jennifer Blood has made a name for herself and has attracted the wrong kind of attention. Now someone has hired a team of killers to take Jennifer out. The killers are a team of young girls who act like every anime schoolgirl ninja stereotype, complete with broken English and inappropriate laughing. Jennifer has a plan though and isn’t going to let herself be taken out by a bunch of clichés [...]
