Jack Bauerstein83   |

Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand
Written by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl
Art by Ramon K. Perez
Archaia Entertainment
Release Date: January 31, 2012
Cover Price: $29.95

When Jim Henson passed away over 20 years ago, the creator left a legacy like no other. His hit show Sesame Street continues to educate kids all over the world. The Muppets, another one of his creations, has endured and just recently made it back into the spotlight, thanks to their recent hit movie. Even the Dark Crystal, though a dud when it came out, is now a cult classic. Henson fever remains alive and well, which is probably why Archaia has decided to published Tale of Sand, a lost screenplay from Henson himself [...]

Geeks of Doom vs. New York Comic Con 2011

The Photo Parade for last weekend’s New York Comic-Con continues with the Sunday edition.

For any other convention, Sunday would be the slowest of all the convention days, but not at this Con, where the final day is Kid’s Day. And at this time, it’s just as busy as any other day and these pics prove it.

As usual, if you see yourself in any of these photos, give a shout out! [...]

NYCC 2011: Cosplay Photos: Spider-Man

The 2011 New York Comic Con on Saturday was nothing less than a madhouse. The Con this year felt like it was a lot bigger than last year but even with the extra space, it still felt like the building was about to burst. While walking down the aisles, one couldn’t help but feel smothered by the mass of people coming from all sides. I guess it is true what they say: Mo’ space, Mo’ problems.

Thankfully, Geeks of Doom was still on hand to show you the cool costumes were present. Saturday was so packed, the photos taken there had to be split up into two parts, so enjoy this photo parade, Volume 1! Second half to come soon.

As always, if you see yourself in any of these photos, be sure to shout out and let us know! [...]

Movie Review: Real Steel

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Real Steel movie poster

Real Steel
Directed by Shawn Levy
Starring Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goya
Release Date: October 7, 2011

Let’s clear the air right now, readers. Real Steel is on the surface an homage to the popular kids’ game Rock’em Sock’em Robots. It is hard to dispute that fact and I don’t think that the creators can even deny that there are similarities. What you don’t notice is that under the metal exterior lies a rather human story.

Real Steel‘s focuses on Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman), an ex-boxer down on his luck. Once, he went toe to toe with the champ, but as the world changed, so did boxing. Now, only robots compete in the squared circle, but even Charlie’s robot can’t cut a break. Things go from bad to worse when his ex-girlfriend passes away leaving him to care for his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo). Charlie wants nothing to do with the kid and only takes him in exchange for some cash, but eventually he warms to the kid and fights to keep him [...]

Advanced TV Review: New Girl: Series Premiere

Jack Bauerstein83   |

New Girl
Series Premiere
Starring Zooey Deschanel, Jake M. Johnson, Max Greenfield, Damon Wayans Jr.
Written by Elizabeth Meriwether
Fox
Air date: Tuesday, September 20, 2011 9/8c

New Girl, the new sitcom from Fox, is the best new show of the TV season. Okay, that is a pretty bold statement. I have not seen any other show from the new Fall lineup, but if the preview that I saw of the pilot episode is an indicator of how the series will play out, then those other new shows will have to have to bring their A game to the table.

Right about now, I am sure you are wondering why this show is so great. Is the premise really that original? Well, no. The premise is pretty much a staple of in the landscape of TV sitcoms. A recently single girl, Jess (Zooey Deschanel), moves into an apartment with a group of guys she has nothing in common with [...]

Movie Review: Captain America: The First Avenger

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Captain America: The First Avenger
Directed by Joe Johnston
Starring Chris Evan, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones
Release Date: July 22, 2011

In 1992, 9-year-old me entered a video store and struck gold. Among the shelves and shelves of VHS tapes was a single copy of Captain America: The Movie. Already a comic (not to mention Captain America) fan, you can only imagine how excited I was to view what I assumed would be a masterpiece. The movie was anything but and left much to be desired, but 9-year-old me loved the hell out of it. Despite its shortcomings and flaws, watching Captain America throw his shield for the first time just blew my mind. Fast forward to nearly 20 years later, I wondered if the latest Marvel Studios movie, Captain America: The First Avenger would do the very same thing.

With America just stepping into World War II, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) wanted nothing more than to serve his country. Despite being constantly rejected by recruitment agencies due to his meek size, Rogers’ unflagging persistence pays off and catches the attention of a scientist by the name of Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci). Erskine enlists him in a top secret super solider program. Injected with a Super-Soldier serum and bathed in “Vita Rays,” Rogers is transformed into a perfect human specimen. He becomes more than just a super soldier, but a symbol for America. He becomes Captain America [...]

Top 5 Underrated Captain America Villains

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Week of Geek: Captain America: The First Avenger

If you have read Captain America comics since you were a wee lad like me, then you are probably excited about Marvel’s newest blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger.

I for one can hardly wait to see the Star Spangled Avenger appear on the silver screen for the first time, mixing it up with his arch enemies Hydra and the Red Skull. While these villains are certainly not to be underestimated, there are quite a few Cap villains that are. We at Geeks of Doom believe that every dog deserves his day so we are proud to present Top 5 Underrated Captain America Villains.

These villains might be underrated for a reason, but someone out there digs them. Continue reading to see who makes the list!

Flag Smasher
Don’t feel bad for Karl Morgenthau. Sure, he is number five on the list but he has so much going for him. He was the son of a Swiss Diplomat, his choice of weaponry includes a spiked mace and a shield, and he was one of the few Captain America foes to give him a run for his money. [...]

Captain America’s Top 5 Partners In Crime

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Week of Geek: Captain America: The First Avenger

If you have been a huge fan of Captain America like I am, then you should be excited about Marvel’s newest blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger.

The movie looks like it will be the best Marvel movie yet, but we here at Geeks of Doom don’t want to neglect Cap’s comic counterpart. I mean without the comic, there would be no movie. So, here to spread some comic love, we’re proud to present Captain America’s Top 5 Partners In crime.

Continue on to check out the list!

Diamondback
So we all know the best partners in life are the ones that challenge you and no partner changed Cap more than Rachel Leighton, aka Diamondback. As a founding member of the villain super-group The Serpent Society, Diamondback was initially called upon by her group to take down the good Captain, but his crime fighting ways got the best of her. Maybe it was his earnest demeanor or maybe it is because women love a man who wears an American Flag as a costume but she was smitten the first time they met. Diamondback eventually switched sides for Cap and they went on several missions together, proving once again that when you are patriotic, blond, and pumped full of government sanction drugs, the ladies will turn over a new leaf for you in a heartbeat. Winnie the Pooh

Based on the characters by A.A. Milne
Featuring the voices of John Cleese, Craig Ferguson, Jim Cummings
Rated G

Release Date: July 15, 2011

If you are tired of seeing a summer blockbuster involving superheroes, wizards, or transforming robots, perhaps a trip through the Hundred Acre Wood would do you some good. For the first time in six years, Winnie the Pooh returns to the big screen in a brand new feature from Disney Pictures simply titled Winnie the Pooh.

Pooh’s friend Eeyore’s tail has gone missing and it is up to Pooh to find it. Pooh discovers soon that a tail is not the only thing that is missing. It seems his human friend Christopher Robin has also disappeared, leaving a curious note behind. Where has Christopher gone? Does it have anything to do with Eeyore’s missing tail? And who or what is a “Backson?”

The film, which is based off of three Pooh stories written by creator A.A. Milne, doesn’t try hard to reinvent the wheel. The characters are not rebooted or remade for the new generation. Its sole purpose is to tell an entertaining, by the book story about Winnie the Pooh and accomplishes this task with flying colors [...]

Theater Review: Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark
Starring Reeve Carney, Jennifer Darmiano, Patrick Page
Score by Bono and The Edge
Foxwoods Theatre
Opening Date: June 14, 2011

Just like in the comics, it seems Spider-Man can’t even catch a break on Broadway. From less than kind reviews to stunt guys getting hurt, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, once a promising musical production, looked like it was going to implode. But, in true Spider-Man fashion, the production dusted itself off and tried again. Now, after a brief hiatus and a rewrite, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark 2.0 begins their preview run once again.

Turn Off The Dark tells the tale of Peter Parker, a high school student bitten by a radioactive spider that gives him super powers. At first, Parker uses his power for personal gain but when tragedy strikes, he learns that with great power must always come great responsibility [...]

Comic Review: Walt Simonson’s The Mighty Thor Omnibus

Week of Geek: Thor

Mighty Thor - Simonson

The Mighty Thor Omnibus
Hardcover
Written by Walt Simonson
Drawn by Walt Simonson and Sal Buscema
1192 pages
Marvel Comics
Release Date: April 27, 2011

Whether it is a man dressed like a bat, a military super-soldier, or an Amazonian woman of wonder, superhero stories are essentially modern day myths. Of stories of modern day gods that roam the Earth, there is no hero more godly than the God of Thunder himself, Thor.

With the Thor movie out in theaters and Odin’s son playing a prominent role in the Avengers movie, it seemed only appropriate that Marvel would come out with The Mighty Thor Omnibus [...]

Top 5 Activities Playstation Network Members Can Do Now That PSN Is Down

Jack Bauerstein83   |

It has been six days since Sony was forced to shut down of the Playstation Network, but for PSN members, it probably feels like a lifetime. The popular online gaming service was hit hard by hackers last week, forcing the video game giant to shut down their service. Since then, news has been less than grand.

From talks that the server won’t be fully online for another two to nine months to the hackers possibly obtaining the personal information of over 77 million users, it doesn’t look like PSN members will be fragging any of their friends anytime soon. But before PSN members start to panic and request being put on suicide watch, your friends at Geeks of Doom have compiled a list of five activities to do while the network undergoes a much needed renovation [...]
