Forget The ‘RoboCop’ Statue, Try #Robocharity

As you might have already read on this website, a viral Internet movement is underway to provide the citizens of Detroit a RoboCop statue [read Fans Decide Detroit Needs A RoboCop Statue Despite Government Rejection]. What started off as a joke suggestion from a New England man on Twitter has turned into a donation drive to bring an actual statue of the sci-fi hero to the city. The drive has been so successful, the required $50,000 cost has already been raised in less than 10 days. While this grassroots campaign is nothing short of amazing, I can’t but feel like this is leaving a sour taste in my mouth.
Face it, there are a million reasons why Detroit’s Mayor David Bing rejected this idea of creating a RoboCop statue. The most important reason? Because it is stupid. Why spend the city’s dollars on creating a statue to a fictitious crime fighting robot? What will that do for the declining city and its disenfranchised population? Some parts of Michigan don’t even have enough money to run a local paper and yet somehow, $50,000 was raised to put up a statue of RoboCop? I am as much of a fan of RoboCop as the next guy, but there isn’t a reason out there that can explain why a statue is needed [...]

TV Review: Young Justice

Young Justice
Featuring the voices of Jessie McCartney, Danica McKellar, and Nolan North
Cartoon Network
Monday Nights
Premiere Date: January 7, 2011
I think 2011 is probably the perfect time to be a comics fan. From blockbuster movies, direct-to-DVD movies, and even TV shows, people everywhere can’t seem to get enough of the superhero genre. So it should be no surprise then that along with the movie or TV show, there has to be a superhero cartoon out there. Marvel has already kicked off the new wave of cartoons with the Avengers and the soon to debut Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. DC, not wanting to be left out in the cold, plans to bring to the table Green Lantern later in the year and just recently out their newest series, Young Justice, to the Cartoon Network.
Young Justice follows the escapades of some of the sidekicks in the DC Universe. Comprised of Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy, Aqualad, and Miss Martian, the groups struggles with working together as team, living up to the expectations, and just dealing with teenage hormones. Teen Titans they are definitely not [...]

Blu-ray Review: Scooby-Doo 1 & 2 Collection

Scooby-Doo 1 & 2 Collection
Blu-ray
Directed by Raja Gosnell
Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Release date: November 10, 2010
I have never been a big Scooby-Doo fan. I was more involved with mutant turtles and tiny toons to pay attention, but I had some passing knowledge of the popular cartoon. Next to Mickey Mouse, Scooby-Doo is pretty high up on the animated animal chart so it was only natural that his presence would be felt on the big screen. Enter Scooby-Doo and its sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which were recently re-released on Blu-ray as a two-pack.
Scooby-Doo brings the famous Mystery Inc. detective agency together in their first live-action adventure. After a solving case involving a flying “ghost,” the Scooby gang gets into a heated argument, resulting in Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby going their separate ways. Two years pass and the former Scooby gang are brought back together once more by an eccentric millionaire. It seems his amusement park, Spooky Island, is having an odd effect on his guests and he wants the top detective agency to solve the mystery. In Scooby Doo-2, the sequel picks up with Mystery Inc. right at the height of their popularity up until some of their foes from their cartoon past make their presence appear, causing all sorts of havoc on their lives [...]

Blu-ray Review: Elf: The Ultimate Collection

Elf
Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray
Directed by Jon Favreau
Starring Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, Peter Dinklage
Warner Bros Home Entertainment
Release date: October 26, 2010
Ask any Will Ferrell fan about his movies, and they most definitely will be able to quote lines from it, almost verbatim. Some like his wacky turn as news reporter/lothario Ron Burgundy in Anchorman. Other prefers him as Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights. For me, my favorite movie from the Ferrell library is Elf, his first major movie and box office success. So, with the holidays right around the corner, it is no surprise that the movie would be re-released on Blu-ray as an Ultimate Collector’s Edition.
Elf stars Will Ferrell as Buddy, a human who when he was just a baby, hopped into Santa’s sleigh and was whisked to the North Pole. Because he was an orphan, an old wise elf (Bob Newhart) decides to raise him as his own. Fast forward 30 years, when Buddy discovers that not only is he not an elf, but his real human father is in New York City. Hoping to reconnect with the father he never knew he had, Buddy embarks on a quest to the Big Apple one special Christmas season [...]

TV Review: Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes
Featuring the voices of Alex Desert, Phil Lamarr, Brian Bloom
Disney XD
Wednesday Nights
Release Date: October 20, 2010
Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is Marvel’s second crack at the premier superhero team in the animation world. The first series, Avengers: United They Stand, was an honest attempt to make the concept work but that failed quickly, mostly due to the lack of presence from the more popular Avengers. Now, with the Avengers movie just around the corner, Marvel is dead set to make a cartoon worthy of the proposed blockbuster film.
The premise of the series harks back to the original concept of the comic book series. When a threat of epic proportions rears its ugly head, only the Avengers can save the day. In the original comic book, the threat was Thor’s evil brother Loki but in the cartoon, it is the breakout of various super-villains.
It seems an unknown individual has disassembled world police SHIELD’s securities systems and caused their systems to crash. As a result, four super prisons went offline allowing all sorts of villains to escape. Now, it is up Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to capture them all back [...]

Movie Review: Due Date

Due Date
Directed by Todd Phillips
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan, Jamie Foxx
Release Date: November 5, 2010
Ever see a trailer that is so good that you can’t believe the movie could possibly hold up to all your huge expectations and it turns out that it doesn’t? That in a nutshell is Due Date. Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The movie, directed by Todd Philips (The Hangover), is hardly a bad film. It just a film you’ve seen before.
Due Date follows Peter (Robert Downey Jr.), a father-to-be trying to catch a plane back to his wife in Los Angeles. Peter, by chance, meets up with Ethan (Zach Galifianakis), an aspiring actor en route to Los Angeles and the two immediately get off on the wrong foot. Things go from bad to worse when both Peter and Ethan get tossed off their plane (thanks, in large part, to Ethan) and are forced to drive across country together to make their destination.
While there are some funny scenes and bits, Due Date is pretty much a by-the-book buddy comedy. Downey’s Peter is the high strung, typical straight man while Galifianakis’ Ethan, the imbecilic but sweet goof, is his foil [...]

DVD Review: Ben 10 Alien Force, Vol. 8

Ben 10 Alien Force, Vol. 8
DVD
Featuring the voices of Wil Wheaton, John Dimaggio, Yuri Lowenthal
Cartoon Network
Release Date: August 24, 2010
If I could name this volume of Ben 10: Alien Force, I would call it “The Rogue Gallery,” since the five episodes in this volume featured villains from Ben Tennyson’s past. For those not familiar with the cartoon, Ben Tennyson is no ordinary teenager. Not only is he a part of a secret intergalactic police group known as the Plumbers, but he is also the sole bearer of the Omnitrix, a device that allows him to transform into various alien beings. With Gwen, his cousin and fellow Plumber, and her love interest Kevin, they embark on adventures filled with aliens, bounty hunters, and spell casters.
I have reviewed my fair share of Ben 10 episodes and I am happy to report that these episodes are just as good as the previous. The quality of the writing and story is top notch for a kid’s program. I am always surprised by how snappy and quick the dialogue is for a kid’s cartoon, but I expect nothing less from creators of the show, the collection of comic artist and writers known as Man of Action. Along with great writing, the episodes always throw in some entertaining fight scenes, which are sure to dazzle the kids who watch the show [...]

Movie Review: Waiting For Superman

Waiting For Superman
Written and Directed by Davis Guggenheim
Participant Media
Release date: September 24, 2010
If director Davis Guggenheim’s previous film, An Inconvenient Truth, was America’s wake-up call to the global warming crisis, then his latest effort, Waiting for Superman, is a cry for help to save America’s public school system.
The U.S. public school system is in trouble. Despite the signing of The No Child Left Behind Act in 2001 to improve public education as a whole, the results have been less than stellar. Overall test scores across the states are still at an all-time low, drop-out rates keeping increasing, and some schools still can’t provide basic supplies for their classrooms. So how did it get so wrong? And is it too late to fix this broken institution?
Despite the film’s sometimes grim and always serious tone, the information is presented to the audience in an informative and digestible format. Using cartoon animation, one on one interviews, and kitchy archival footage, the documentary is never boring even if it does feel like a product from the Michael Moore school of documentary filmmaking [...]

DVD Review: Lost: The Complete Collection

Lost: The Complete Collection
DVD | Blu-ray
Created by Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, J.J. Abrams
Starring Matthew Fox, Terry O’ Quinn, Josh Holloway, Evangeline Lilly, Jorge Garcia
Release Date: August 24, 2010
It has been several months since the season finale of Lost, but fans are still buzzing about the finale. Some fans loved it and felt satisfied by the ending, while others felt cheated by it, as though they’ve wasted six years of their life. Me? I was just waiting for Lost: The Complete Series box set to come out. I had a feeling that the producers of the hit show would go the distance to give Lost the proper DVD sendoff it deserves, and boy did they ever.
For those unfamiliar with the show, the series follows a group of passengers from Oceanic Flight 815 after their plane crash lands them on a beautiful and mysterious island. Realizing that until someone finds and rescues them, the surviving members need to learn to live together or die alone. Along they way they meet up with polar bears (yes polar bears!), underground tunnels, smoke monsters, and the mysterious group of people who landed on the island before them, called The Others [...]

Like/Dislike: New York Comic Con 2010

Well boys and girls, another comic convention has come and gone. As we all take time to assess how much of your hard earned dollars you flushed down the toilet on cool art/comics/or toys, I thought it would be a good idea to jot down a couple of the things I liked about this year’s New York Comic Con and a few things I didn’t like.
Like: The set-up
Now I am not sure about you, but I actually quite dug the new convention set-up. The folks at Reed Expo really used their nearly two-year absence effectively, crafting a new layout for the convention floor. Using basically the whole Jacob Javits Center, the convention was actually separated into two areas. There was the all-things-comics portion of the convention on the end of the convention center (Artist Alley, comic book store booths, etc.) and the entertainment portion (video game company booths, comic book publisher booths, etc.) on the other, all connected by one man-made tunnel. The result? Happy fan boys and girls. Those who come only for the comics can stay on one side, and those who want to see everything less can stay on the other. Plus, people can actually get to places they wanted to go with little to no traffic…

Movie Review: The Town

The Town
Directed by Ben Affleck
Starring Ben Affleck, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Rebecca Hall
Warner Bros.
Release Date: September 17, 2010
Whatever your thoughts are of Ben Affleck, there is no denying that the guy has an eye for directing. Even before Gone Baby Gone hit the theaters, there was already a considerable buzz surrounding his directorial debut and for good reason. The movie was a taut and gripping drama and showed a side of Affleck few knew even existed. While few can deny that that movie was well received, many wondered if Affleck would fair just as well, if not better, with his follow-up project, The Town.
The Town, based on the book Prince of Thieves, is a crime heist movie in the name of Michael Mann’s Heat with the heart and soul of Good Will Hunting. The film focuses on a gang of bank robbers in Charlestown, Massachusetts. After a recent bank heist, the group discovers that the bank teller they took hostage (Rebecca Hall) lives in their neighborhood. Fearing they will be recognized, Doug, their de-facto leader volunteers to check her out. In the process, he gets to know the woman and falls for her. Now Doug must choose between the life he can have with the woman he loves or the loyalty of his friends [...]

Blu-ray Review: Mars Attacks!

Mars Attacks!
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Tim Burton
Starring Jack Nicholson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Jack Black, Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Glenn Close
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Release Date September 7, 2010
If anything can be learned from Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!, I believe it is this: Any movie that is based off a card game is not headed to anywhere good.
You can pretty much gather the plotline of the movie just by reading the title, but just for sake of the review, let’s go through the basics. When UFOs are discovered flying toward planet Earth, The President and Washington’s top scientists debate on what their next course of action should be. Believing that the visitors are a friendly bunch, the President sends our military to greet them as they land. With the whole world watching, aliens show their true colors and they don’t appear to be in the mood to give hugs. Now, as Mars attacks, it will take an unlikely hero to step up and defend the Earth from being destroyed […]

DVD Review: Wolverine and The X-Men, Vol. 4: Fate of the Future

Wolverine and the X-Men, Vol. 4: Fate of the Future
DVD
Featuring the voices of Steve Blum, Jennifer Hale, Tom Kane
Release Date: February 2, 2010
While it is especially satisfying to find an episodic cartoon that is a cut above the rest and rises above the genre itself, there is nothing wrong with a simple kid’s cartoon that hits all the right entertaining beats. This is exactly what the Wolverine and The X-Men Vol. 4 delivers.
For those who have just joined the ride, Wolvie and the X-Men is the continuing story of an alternate X-Men universe. This world is not exactly “world turned upside down” different, but the subtle changes, along with the additions of some of the details from the comic and movie version gives this an almost Elseworlds type of feel [...]

Movie Review: The A-Team
The A-Team
Directed by Joe Carnahan
Written by Joe Carnahan, Brian Bloom, Skip Wood
Starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Sharlto Copley
Rated R
Release Date: June 11, 2010
We are barely into the summer movie season, film analysts in La-La land are already predicting the lowest summer box office intake in many years, but who can blame them? With Sex and the City‘s less than sexy opening box office number and Iron Man 2‘s less than invincible reviews, this year’s summer lineup looks to be less than stellar. Perhaps what this sagging box office needs is a group of soldiers for hire, who, if you have a problem and no one else can help, can solve all your problems.
Colonel John “Hannibal” Smith (Liam Neeson), Templeton “Faceman” Peck (Bradley Cooper), B.A. Baracus (Quinton “Rampage” Jackson), and H.M. Murdock (Sharlto Copley) were sent on a covert mission during the Gulf War to retrieve stolen U.S. Treasury plates, and things naturally goes awry. The explosive results leave their commanding officer dead, the plates taken by rogue soldiers of fortune, and this “A-Team” framed for a crime they did not commit. With nothing left to lose, The A-Team sets out to clear their name, avenge their C.O.’s death, and have a lot of fun doing it [...]

Game Review: Marjorie Liu’s Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box
Marjorie Liu’s Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box
Written by Marjorie Liu
PassionFruit Games
Platform: PC
Release date: April 28, 2010
Romance writer Marjorie Lui can now add “computer game creator” onto her expanding resume. Along with penning the successful Dirk and Steele books and currently writing the Black Widow comic for Marvel Comics, Lui has teamed up with PassionFruit Games to adapt Tiger Eye into an interactive game for the PC.
Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box follows the story of Dela Resse, a woman who is thrust into danger after purchasing a mysterious riddle box in China. It seems some really bad guys want their hands on the box and to further complicate things, the box also houses Hari, a powerful warrior who was imprisoned in the box 2,000 years prior. With a journey around the world from China to the United States, Dela and Hari struggle to uncover the truth about the box and in the process maybe even find love.
Adapting a popular novel into a video game is hard enough as it is, but to adapt a romance novel into a mostly male oriented market? That is a pretty big mountain to climb but PassionFruit does its best to make the game work for any fan. The player is tasked with finding various hidden objects in each level. By finding all these objects, a puzzle would be unlocked and have to be solved to move the game along. Whether you have played video games all your life or Tiger Eye is your first, this game should be easy to play or understand. The game play is another entirely different story [...]

DVD Review: ‘Nurse Jackie’ Season One
Nurse Jackie Season One
Blu-ray | DVD
Starring Edie Falco, Eve Best, Peter Facinelli
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release date: February 25, 2010
On the surface Nurse Jackie looks a lot like another doctor show on television right now. Starring Edie Falco as the titular Nurse Jackie Peyton, viewers get a glimpse into the life of a strong, loving, and yet also hard to love nurse and her rather complicated life. When she is not busy saving lives and making sure idiot doctors don’t get in the way, she is doing her best to keep her rather messy work life from colliding with her already hectic home life. She is also nursing a killer painkiller addiction she is keeping from everyone she knows, as well as another pretty big secret (which I won’t reveal here).
I have to admit, other than this show, I haven’t seen any of Falco’s work on the Sopranos. However, I do know that when an actor from a popular TV show ventures off to headline his or her own series, it is a pretty big deal. Will the show work? Will viewers be able to disconnect them from their previous work and focus on this show? Can this actor even hold a show on their own after being a part of an ensemble this whole time? Luckily, in this case, all these questions can be answered with a resounding yes, thanks in part to a great writing and great acting one-two punch [...]
