Every hero must have an adversary, you know this to be true. What would Batman be without the Joker? Or Spider-Man without the Green Goblin? Boring, that is what they would be!

A couple of years ago I was able to review a book that examined some of history’s less notable heroes, the link can be found here. This time, however, I am able to delve into the world of their enemies! I present to you The Legion of Regrettable Supervillains: Oddball Criminals from Comic Book History!

Dungeons & Dragons: Tales From The Yawning Portal
D&D Accessory
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
Release Date: April 4, 2017

It’s always a fine day when I get to review a D&D book. I’m especially excited about Dungeons & Dragons: Tales From The Yawning Portal, as it incorporates classic adventures that have been updated for use with the Fifth Edition rules and guidebooks.

There are a total of seven full-sized adventures and I must admit a couple of them are favorites of mine. Some small adjustments have been made to allow the seven modules to be run consecutively. Imagine having a first-level character and being able to run a campaign that sees them traverse a variety of iconic story lines. It’s enough to make a nerd cry with joy (or at least this one might).

Markosia Comics
Release Date: March 29, 2017
Cover Price: $1.99

You might remember a couple of months ago I reviewed a comic titled Lords of the Cosmos #1. I found it to be entertaining and unique for the most part. Well, the same writers have a new offering for us by the name of Plague #1! And while the subject matter is remarkably different, the same pizzazz remains.

The year is 1352 and the bubonic plague is sweeping through Europe and killing people by the millions. Sadly, more than mankind is suffering; even the fey have been struck by this blight upon the earth. As the faerie king lay dying, his son returns home to find him succumbing to the ravages of the Black Death. It is upon that deathbed that the prince swears to save his folk at any cost.

Disney Wants To Reimagine Classic ‘Star Wars’ Parody ‘Hardware Wars’

Star Wars parody Hardware Wars

In 1977, the world was amazed and delighted by the now iconic film Star Wars. The following year, a short parody film by the name of Hardware Wars found its way into the hearts of millions. With characters by the name of Fluke Starbucker, Augie “Ben” Doggie, Princess Anne-Droid, Ham Salad, and Chewchilla the Wookiee Monster, the short film’s cast was an obvious tongue-in-cheek referencing to the original Star Wars roles. Household equipment made up the vast majority of props in the parody, hence the name. Hilarious and goofy, the video lampoon was and is a cult classic to this day. As a matter of fact, I just watched it again and laughed all the way through.

HBO Wants Pastry-Themed ‘True Blood’ Spinoff ‘Sookie’s Cookies’

True Blood

HBO’s True Blood series was a phenomenal hit by any measurement. Based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, they follow the adventures of Sookie Stackhouse, a telepath in Louisiana who possesses an extraordinary lack of self-preservation. Constantly in danger, she aligns herself with and against supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves, all the while seeking to find her place in the world. Sookie, played by Anna Paquin in all seven seasons, finally seems to find herself living a normal life after the end of the final season. But fans have continued to clamor for more. Will HBO ever deliver?

This one was new for me. I’m not sure how it has eluded me for so long, but I must admit that I am smitten. Black Hammer Volume 1: Secret Origins collects the first six issues of the series into one volume that tells a cohesive story all the while exploring what it is to be alone and yet together. This dilemma is the result of a sacrifice gone too far. Not to say that the group wasn’t grateful, just that isolation and protection does not always equal freedom.

Okay, first off, if I have to try to convince you to buy a comic that contains eight premiere issues for a measly six bucks then I might just have to reassess what I am doing here.

I have reviewed any number of these titles at different times and I cannot even begin to stress to you how great of a deal this is. Dark Horse Comics continues to amaze me with their marketing strategies. I can think of no better way to test out some new comics than with this compilation. Folks, I present to you Dark Horse Number Ones!
