Geek Fit: Social Fitness – Fitocracy

Aaron the Strong   |

Geek Fit

Working out alone eventually gets boring. Working out with a friend adds a little bit of competition to your workouts and gives your someone to at least talk to while you abuse yourself. At the same time, I don’t want to just go work out with some random meat head that makes me feel super inadequate. The problem I run into most often is that the vast majority of the people I would want to hang out with aren’t interested in going to the gym with me. A while ago I began searching for a solution for this problem.

As a family man with a kid who takes up most of my time and an incredibly busy life in general, I don’t get to just go socialize and make friends very often. Social networking sites are fantastic for me because they allow me to still connect and socialize with people on some level without having to go to some formally organized event that would require a babysitter. Naturally, when I began looking for a solution to the aforementioned problem I started in the App stores. Most of the fitness apps that I found are just calorie trackers or maybe suggested routine apps. Then I caught a conversation a couple friends were having via Twitter talking about following each other on something called Fitocracy. [...]

Rovio Entertainment Announces ‘Angry Birds’ Movie In Development

eelyajekiM   |

Angry Birds Image

Rovio Entertainment could not have seen their Angry Birds mobile app game catapult itself into the territory that it is in now. There are Angry Birds shirts, towels, toys, and a few special edition games – Star Wars being the most notable one so far – and now a movie. Yes a movie.

It would have been hard to believe that we’d get to this point when the original game was released a few years back, but it has indeed gotten to it. And now Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on to produce the film, while David Maisel (formerly of Marvel Studios) is on board as an executive producer. [...]

Geek Fit: Healthy Living Gadgetry Review

Aaron the Strong   |

Geek Fit

I love all variety of gadgets. I tend to jump on the bandwagon being pulled behind any new and interesting technology as fast as my wallet will let me. Sometimes I am rewarded, sometimes I’m disappointed, but I always enjoy the thrill that comes from experiencing vast leaps forward in technology. When Jawbone introduced the UP, I was in the middle of my fitness revolution and was immediately excited to try it out.

Not only does this little bracelet count your steps like a standard little pedometer, but it also tracks your sleep cycles. Jawbone promises that the UP’s gentle vibrations would wake you up at the optimum time in your sleep cycle to ensure a pleasant waking experience every day. Combine all of this with a colorful, fun iPhone app and you’ve got me hook, line, and sinker! I picked up this cool little device as soon as it hit the shelves of my local Target (Target always has all the coolest stuff). [...]

Marvel Digital Goes 3.0!

Culturesmash   |

Marvel Comics Digital App 3.0

Marvel Comics has launched the 3.0 version of their application for Android and iOS. The new design mirrors that of the updated DC Comics and the Comixology apps. The new version sorts comics not only by new and featured, but also by creator. It features larger thumbnail images of the art and a full screen interface for information about a given book rather than the pop-up window that the previous incarnation of the app utilized. [...]

Start the Countdown To Christmas With the ‘Cthulhu Christmas Calendar’ App

Empress Eve   |

Cthulhu

Nothing says Christmas like Cthulhu!

The folks over at Red Wasp have designed a great app for the holiday season — the Cthulhu Christmas Calendar. Starting December 1, you can have adorably illustrated renderings of H.P. Lovecraft’s terrifying creations help you countdown the 25 days til Christmas on your smartphone or iPad.

This unique digital advent calendar contains an original illustration for each day that combines classic Christmas imagery like mistletoe with figures from H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, like Shoggoth mailing a letter to Santa, who, as we know, will find out if he’s been naughty or nice [...]

Dealing With The Daily On iPad

Culturesmash   |

The Daily

Publishers have been trying for a while now to find a way to survive the onslaught of free information available on the web. Many magazines and newspapers have folded, for good, and others have been able to survive as websites, and still others continue to straddle the line both in print and on the internet.

Some publishers see the new tablet craze as a potential way to survive, or better yet to reinvent themselves. Up to now the most popular attempt has come from a company called Zinio. Zinio offers up digital versions of many of the most popular magazines that were once exclusives to magazine racks. The price is lower than their print counterparts and the digital experience offers a slick and cool way to read magazines as well as the ability to carry many magazines on the go all inside a tablet. Media magnate Rupert Mrudoch has jumped into the this new frontier in a big way with his new daily digital newspaper called aptly enough, The Daily. [...]
