The Doctor Who TARDISblend 37: Night Terrors

cGt2099   |

Doctor Who

Series Six of Doctor Who continues, and begins with the Doctor receiving a mysterious message via the Psychic Paper asking to be “saved from the monsters.” Along with companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), the trio trace the message to a multi-story set of flats in a council estate area of England, where they find the young boy who sent the plea of his fears across the cosmos: George (Jamie Oram).

But as the Doctor begins investigating the strange case of George, Amy, and Rory disappear and find themselves in a mysterious wooden Victorian home being chased by creepy “life-size” wooden dolls with malicious intents. The deeper the trio delve into the confusion, the more they discover the horrible truth: George’s monsters are real. But where are they coming from?

During TARDISblend 36, we review the events of Night Terrors, a return to form for writer Mark Gatiss. Within the episode itself, we look especially closely at Smith’s flawless performance as The Doctor, evoking elements of previous Doctors, in a manner that made it his own, looking upon the galaxy with the old eyes of a Time Lord [...]

Dragon*Con 2011 Video: Wil Wheaton Mimes Eureka’s Series Finale Ending

Tom Cheredar   |

Wil Wheaton

Both fans and cast members of Syfy Channel original TV series Eureka lamented on the show’s cancellation during a Eureka panel at Dragon*Con 2011 Sunday.

But the sad news of Eureka‘s death didn’t make the panel any less entertaining.

For instance, Wil Wheaton (Dr. Isaac Parrish) fulfilled an audience member’s request for details about Eureka’s upcoming fifth season by miming the last scenes from the finale.

Check out the video embedded here [...]

Dragon*Con 2011 Video: D*CTV’s Avengers Anti-Drugs PSA Parody

Tom Cheredar   |

Captain America PSA

The folks at Dragon*Con TV have released yet another of their humorous videos that play on all the panel screens while people wait in line and such at Dragon*Con 2011.

The latest video features members of Marvel’s most powerful superhero team The Avengers trying — and failing — to produce a public service announcement advising children not to do drugs.

The humor of this situation — as many long-time fans of the comic book know — is that Tony Stark (a.k.a Iron Man) is a recovering alcoholic while the team’s star spangled leader Captain America owes all of his powers to experimenting with drugs [...]

Dragon*Con 2011 Video: ‘Eureka’ Star Colin Ferguson To Direct Syfy Original Movies

Geeks of Doom Invades: Dragon*Con 2011

Eureka's Colin Ferguson and Chris Gauthier

Colin Ferguson, who plays Sheriff Jack Carter on sci-fi TV show Eureka, will direct at least one future Syfy Channel original movie, the actor announced during a panel Sunday at Dragon*Con 2011.

In the past, fans have often ridiculed Syfy’s made-for-TV movies, which feature hokey stories and awful dialog — especially when compared to the network’s original TV shows like Eureka.

Like the good sport he is, Ferguson also poked fun at past Syfy original movies along with the other fellow cast members on the panel, which included Wil Wheaton (Dr. Isaac Parrish), Jordan Hinson (Zoe Carter), and Chris Gauthier (Vincent) as well as the show’s science consultant Kevin Robert Grazier.

Ferguson and Wheaton recited a list of story ideas for possible movies that Syfy executives rejected, like The Mexercist, Diary of Anne Frankenstein, and Manchilla (a movie about a creature that’s part-man, part-chinchilla) [...]

15 Awesome ‘Doctor Who’ Cosplay Photos From Dragon*Con 2011

Geeks of Doom Invades: Dragon*Con 2011

Tenth Doctor And K9

Simply put: Doctor Who is huge at this year’s giant geek gathering in Atlanta, Georgia, known as Dragon*Con.

Seriously though. The abundance of long colorful scarves, sonic screwdrivers, and dalek dresses is ridiculous and wonderful all at the same time.

Because of this (and due to the fact that I co-host Geeks of Doom’s Doctor Who podcast called the TARDISblend with Greg Davies), we’re presenting you with the best Whovian cosplay we found covering the convention floor [...]

Dragon*Con 2011: Quite Possibly The Best TARDIS Dress We’ve Ever Seen (Photo)

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades: Dragon*Con 2011

TARDIS Dress

Among all the great Doctor Who cosplayers at Dragon*Con 2011 who turn props from the TV show into elegant dresses, none of them come close to the one we spotted in the photo above.

Modeled after the Doctor’s police box time machine, the TARDIS ballroom dress was created by Kelldar, who is known by frequent convention goers for her awesome costuming skills.

Kelldar said the inspiration for the dress came after getting an incorrect shade of blue — “TARDIS Blue” as she called it — fabric for a Marie Antoinette dress she wanted to make. Rather than ship it back, she decided to go with it [...]

Dragon*Con 2011 Video: Ladies Of ‘The Guild’ Share Details On Upcoming Episodes

The Guild Panel

The leading ladies from hit web series The Guild made their way to Atlanta this weekend to join in the geeky celebration that is Dragon*Con 2011. And fortunately for us, they even participated in some panels about the show.

Amy Okuda (Tinkerballa), Robin Thorsen (Clara), and creator/star Felicia Day (Codex) spoke about their past experiences working on The Guild as well as what fans can expect from the next few episodes and future seasons of the show.

If you didn’t already know (and if you’re reading this far into the article, you probably should), The Guild began its fifth season in late July. The most recent episode, Revolving Doors, aired on the show’s official website this week [...]

Dragon*Con 2011 Video: ‘The Walking Dead’ Cast Eerily Silent About New Showrunner

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades: Dragon*Con 2011

The Walking Dead Cast

The Walking Dead might be getting a 90-minute premiere when it airs its second season this October, but it’ll be doing so without original showrunner Frank Darabont, which has more than just fans concerned about the show’s future.

The show’s cast stayed silent about Darabont’s departure during the The Walking Dead cast panel on Friday at Dragon*Con 2011 — their first large public appearance since San Diego Comic-Con in July, after which Darabont was fired.

I’ve embedded a video of the panel below, but I feel obligated to give fair warning to the people who are only looking for spoilers: It doesn’t really contain much information about the next season. Oddly, there also isn’t any mention from the actors about what it’s been like working under new showrunner Glen Mazzara [...]

Dragon*Con 2011 Video: ‘Doctor Who’ Actor Sylvester McCoy Reveals Origins Of His Name

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades: Dragon*Con 2011

Sylvester McCoy, the seventh actor to portray The Doctor on classic British TV show Doctor Who, revealed yesterday the melodic and humorous origins of his name during his first panel (ever) at this year’s Dragon*Con.

As McCoy explains in the video, which you can watch here below, “Sylvester” actually started out as “Sylvest.” It was coined from a song that he graciously performed for the crowd.

His surname came from “a bad joke.” And don’t get me wrong, if I typed said joke out in this post or retold it to you in person, it would most certainly be a bad joke. However, when McCoy tells it, it’s brilliant.

Anyone who doubts his abilities as a valuable part of the Doctor Who cannon would do well to watch the video [...]

Dragon*Con 2011 Video: Sylvester McCoy Recites Lines From ‘Doctor Who: The Pandorica Opens’

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades: Dragon*Con 2011

Sylvester McCoy

Sylvester McCoy, the seventh actor to portray The Doctor on classic British TV show Doctor Who, made his first appearance at Dragon*Con today.

Not only did McCoy reveal the humorous origins of his name, but the actor also read a scene from recent Doctor Who episode The Pandorica Opens, which was originally performed by Matt Smith.

Why would McCoy do such a thing?

Partially, I think it’s because he is very fan friendly. The reading was done at the request of the panel moderator, who wanted to dispel the notion that McCoy was a bad doctor by giving him some decently written dialogue [...]

Watch Now: Dragon*Con TV ‘Twilight’ Parody ‘When Edward Met Bella’

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades: Dragon*Con 2011

D*CTV, the good folks who provide video entertainment to the 40,000 convention attendees at Dragon*Con, has released a new sketch that picks fun at two characters that are either extremely loved or extremely hated the world over: Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.

Below is the video they produced parodying the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally — only using the two most popular characters from Twilight.

From the video description:

“Want to watch a movie about two people who communicate poorly and take far too long to hook up? Well, enough about Billy Crystal movies … here’s a Twilight parody. [...]

Watch Now: The Great Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Race

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon*Con 2010 banner

At conventions filled with costumed geeks, they don’t have regular competitions of athleticism. No, they do something far better, such as the first ever Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Race at Dragon*Con 2010, which is planned to be an annual event.

For those that aren’t familiar with the reference, online retailer ThinkGeek produces a sleeping bag that resembles the creature Han Solo slices open and places Luke Skywalker into for warmth on the planet Hoth during the first classic Star Wars sequel Empire Strikes Back [Read Must Own: The Famed ‘Star Wars’ Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Is Now A Reality!]

Organizer geeky costumer Juliette Vincent decided to contact ThinkGeek about sponsoring a race, which they agreed to do if Dragon*Con would officially recognize it in their programing.

The top three winners of the race received prizes and a small legion of respect from onlookers. We of course captured this epic display of athleticism in the shaky videos embedded below.

40 Notable Photos From Dragon*Con 2010

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon*Con 2010 banner

We don’t necessarily need to do much of an introduction for the 40 notable photos taken by Geeks of Doom photographer Derek Deweese (and a few by myself, which you can tell by the crappy quality of my iPhone 3G) at Dragon*Con 2010.

You can imagine the difficulty in sifting through your photos each night when there are five convention-sized hotels filled with costumed geeks. To do this over the good part of a week, well, you can see why it might be *somewhat* of a task.

But, alas, check out our last batch of photo coverage of this year’s Dragon*Con after the jump [...]

You might also notice that there are 10 more cosplay ladies than the last two posts.

This was not an accident and was done lovingly since we didn’t want to hold out any longer. So, without further adieu check out the photo gallery after the jump [...]

Dragon*Con 2010: Watch Now: Venture Bros. Creators Turn Panel Into ’70s Talkshow

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon*Con 2010 banner

The minds behind Adult Swim hit show The Venture Bros. Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer — decided to meet their adoring fans differently for their Dragon*Con 2010 panel by setting up some comfy chairs, a coffee table and cheesy ’70′s music that played whenever the pair wasn’t speaking.

Call it convention fatigue or boredom, but Publick and Hammer thought it would be better to treat the scheduled time as an old school talkshow — Maury Povich style. They took turns running through the crowded ballroom allowing fans to ask questions and receive a rose if it was deemed worthy of answering.

We captured the whole thing on a shaky, amateurishly handled FlipCam and have subsequently uploaded the videos to YouTube, which you can watch below.

Some of the high points include Bill Hader replacing the voice of Stephen Cobert as Professor Richard Impossible, why a Venture Bros. feature-length film is probably a bad idea and lots of news regarding who will be back for the last part of the season.

Check out the embedded video after the jump. [...]

Dragon*Con 2010: Watch Now: Unknown Hinson Performs For Adult Swim Panel

Tom Cheredar   |

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon*Con 2010 banner

Rockabilly musician and voice of proudly ignorant Georgia squid Early Cuyler, Unknown Hinson returned to Dragon*Con this year for a performance during the Adult Swim Squidbillies panel.

Hinson, who shaved his iconic sideburns much to the dismay of those in the audience, played a three-song set for the crowd before joining the entire cast of Squidbillies in an unrehearsed reading of a script for a future episode of the show.

While we didn’t record the cast reading, we did manage to get coverage of Hinson’s performance, which we’ve embedded in the three videos below [...]

Dragon*Con 2010: Adult Swim Panel: New ‘Aqua Teen & ‘Squidbillies’ In 2011 (Feat. Puppet Carl)

Tom Cheredar   |

Whenever Adult Swim hosts a panel at Dragon*Con, it’s safe to assume they’ve brought their “A” games — and by that I mean those in attendance will get an exclusive performance and most likely will leave laughing their asses off.

Specifically, I’m referring to the team behind Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Squidbillies, who’s panel opened with show creator and voice actor Dave Willis taking stage to recite a monologue performed by a puppet version of Carl. Soon there after, voice talent Dana Snyder joined with a Master Shake puppet.

The puppets — presumably from the ATHF live action show tour Willis and Snyder did earlier in the year — were actually a genius idea to associate the voices with the characters (since voice actors aren’t always easy to identify) [...]

Dragon*Con 2010: Avengers Cosplay Photo Gallery

Tom Cheredar   |

Ever since Marvel Entertainment confirmed that Joss Whedon had been chosen to direct their big budget Avengers film, the fan community has vocalized their support or distaste of the decision.

The point being? There is a renewed interest in all things Avengers.

For proof, one need only look to the attendees of Dragon*Con 2010, who showed off a plethora of well crafted costumes this year that featured Avengers both new and old.

We’ve attempted to capture a handful of what we saw while covering the event this past weekend in the photo gallery embedded below.

It’s also worth noting that Geeks of Doom photographer Derek Deweese let his fanboyism run wild in some of these photos by attempting to mirror popular comic book covers. (Neither of us remember the issue of The Ultimates where Captain America points to the “A” on his helmet. If you know the cover we’re talking about then by all means educate us in the Comments section below.) [...]
