The Bumble & Wampa Snow Creatures Battle It Out As Cupcakes

As far as snow creatures go, the Wampa Ice Creature from Star Wars: The Empires Strikes Back and the Bumble, the Abominable Snow Monster from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, are probably the most popular. So, it’s not so surprising that someone would want to pit the two monsters against each other.
The Sugar Swings baking blog decided to do so by whipping up a few batches of Wampa and Bumble cupcakes. The results are pretty awesome [...]

Geek Craft: Crocheted Amigurumi Discworld

June Gilbank of Planet June, a crochet pattern designer and craft book author, created a spot-on adorable crocheted Amigurumi Discworld.
Visit June’s Flickr page to see more pictures of the Amigurumi Discworld, which is based on the popular books series Discworld by Terry Pratchett. She made this back in 2008 and contacted Pratchett’s agent hoping the author would see her unique Discworld creation. Pratchett’s response was, ‘Well, if you’re going to crochet Discworld then that’s the way to do it!’ Nice! [...]

DIY: ‘Star Wars’ X-Wing & TIE Fighter Paper Snowflakes

Earlier this month, we wrote about some really cool Star Wars-themed paper snowflakes, for which the creator was nice enough to include instructions and templates.
After seeing those snowflake designs — one for Darth Vader, the other a Boba Fett/Clone Troopers combo — someone else came up with the idea to make other Star Wars-themed paper snowflakes, this time for a Tie Advanced x1 Starfighter and an X-Wing Starfighter.
Check out the image at right (click for larger, full view) of several paper snowflakes that were created. If you look closely, you’ll see how intricate they are, especially the X-Wing version, which has more than just the ship, but also the Rebel Alliance insignia as well as R2-D2 and C-3PO! [...]

Check out the pic at right of Jabba the Snowman.
The snowman Jabba The Hutt is in someone’s front lawn and it looks so cool. I wonder who the Star Wars fan is who did this. I always seem to ask this, but why can’t I have neighbors like this? [...]

Amazing TARDIS Bookcase To Materialize Under Some Lucky Kids’ Christmas Tree This Year
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | December 22nd, 2010 at 12:08 pm |

Where are all these awesome geek parents and uncles and aunts coming from? Honestly, I never had anyone make something this cool for me: a TARDIS bookcase cupboard. Seriously, how amazing is this concept?
Over at Instructables, user caitlinsdad has put up step-by-step documentation on how he made this incredible TARDIS bookcase, based on the time machine used by everyone’s favorite time lord in Doctor Who. It is a Christmas gift he is preparing for his nephews, so the article is an ongoing development, but you can see the final product over there.
Caitlinsdad made the basis of the TARDIS bookcase from a cheap $20 bookcase, which is pretty amazing. I mean, my carpentry skills are on par with Homer Simpson — when I look at a bookshelf in a store, my first thought is, “Crap, will I have to assemble this?” Clearly, caitlinsdad, and many of the other fine folks over at Instructables, look at these items and immediately see artistic goals [...]

Just In Time For The ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special: Gingerbread TARDIS!
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | December 20th, 2010 at 2:53 pm |

When it comes to gingerbread, the only thing I excel at is in eating it. But there are people out there who are incredibly artistic with gingerbread houses and other concepts, and this Gingerbread TARDIS is of no exception.
Based on the time machine used by the Last of the Time Lords in Doctor Who, LiveJournal user therru has created a masterpiece just in time for the Doctor Who Christmas Special. Actually, therru made this Gingerbread TARDIS last Christmas, but decided to share with everyone how to make their own for this Christmas!
The final result is fabulous, and looks amazing. If Tom Baker saw this, he would think it to be “indomitable” and that the only thing missing would be jelly babies.
Be sure to click over to therru’s LiveJournal page for the full step-by-step procedure on how to make your own Gingerbread TARDIS – Fantastic! [...]

DIY Paper ‘Star Wars’ Snowflakes

The holiday season is upon us, which means there’s lots of decorating to be done.
One of the many fun holiday activities for kids to do is to make homemade paper snowflakes. Now you can make your very own Star Wars-themed paper snowflakes!
Just follow these instructions, which include templates, to make your very own paper snowflakes: one is for Darth Vader; the other has Boba Fett and Clone Troopers. Both have the imperial logo in the center.
It’s been a while, but just might have to break out my scissors to try this one out (or get my Mom to do it, yeah, I think that’s the way to go) [...]

Black Metal Amigurumi Crochet Dude Comes Complete With Flying V Guitar
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | November 26th, 2010 at 12:53 pm |

If you’re a metalhead and into crafts, this one might be right up your alley.
Coming complete with a Flying V guitar, pentagram necklace, and bullet-belt; the only thing missing from this little Black Metal dude is the complete burning church playset. The awesome little figure, pictured right (click for enlarged version), is the result of an amigurumi crochet project created by the folks over at Karabouts.
The detail on this little guy is pretty stunning. The spiked gauntlets are made from tacks, the pentagram is actually an earring, and the bullet-belt is made from silver beads. The coolness of this awesome project just makes me want throw out the metal horns and growl some Satanic lyrics.
The artists behind this remarkable amigurumi are the Mike and Kara Amigurumi Design Team and you can check out more photos of the Black Metal dude (posed in front of a church!) and more of their creations at their website [...]

Artist Croshame (aka Shove Mink) created the most awesome combination of cute and sick with The Exorcist Crochet Amigurumi Playset.
Check out the photo of the playset here at right.
This playset depicts a scene from the classic horror film, The Exorcist, where a young demon-possessed girl projectiles green vomit onto the priest performing an exorcist on her. You’ve never seen vomit look so adorable.

Talk Tiny To Me #2: Preparation M
 |
Posted by Witchwater | November 7th, 2010 at 1:32 pm |

It’s effective even in cases of long standing — oh, wait, that’s a different letter. Today’s letter is M…for MINIATURES!
In my previous article, I introduced you to the wonderful world of painting miniatures. I gave you a quick overview of the kind of things this column will be covering, and let you know what kind of tools you would need in order to paint your first miniature. Before you get started, though, you’re going to need to prepare your miniature to be painted. Below is a quick list of the things you’ll need for this. Several were explained in the previous article, but the rest were oversights on my part — sorry ‘bout that!
- An old, used toothbrush or nail-brush (nice to have but not completely necessary; this is explained below)
- A set of clippers or a hobby knife (X-Acto or the like; see below.)
- A long-nose plier.
- Needle files
- Primer (black, white, or grey)
- A breathing filtration mask
- Disposable (latex) gloves
- An old, empty box (or even a new box. S’up to you!) – I use an old U-haul “small box” approximately 13″ high and 16″ wide
- Your miniature
Important Note: For this first set of articles, I am assuming that you have chosen a one-piece miniature, and not one that needs to be assembled. Assembling a multi-piece miniature can be tricky, and I wouldn’t recommend it for your very first time. Besides, my How To Assemble A Multi-Piece Miniature article is still a ways off, and I wouldn’t want to leave you hanging!
So, you got everything? Good! [...]

Video: Holiday Gingerbread TARDIS
What better way to spend an afternoon indoors (beside watching Avatar) than to craft Doctor Who‘s time-traveling vehicle the TARDIS using a gingerbread house kit from the local Wal-Mart?
Geeks Don and Katie decided to do just that while live streaming the whole process on Ustream. Rather than using any form of tutorial, they eyeballed the blue policebox from a photo.
Check out the video here below to see how they did it and click the thumbnail here at right to see a larger, full picture of the TARDIS gingerbread house [...]

Take A Peek At Silber Media’s Mini-Comics
Out there in the world, right this moment, there are countless independent comic book writers and artists trying to make their mark in the comic world. Silber Media is one of those folks, but instead of sticking on the regular path or taking the new road of digital comics, these guys and gals took an alternative path rarely traveled: mini-comics!
Mini comics aren’t comic books, and they’re not comic strips. They’re kind of a hybrid of the two. Each is about the size of a matchbook, with one panel, one picture, and one or two lines of dialogue on each page, but in the page-turning book format. Basically, you throw a handful of them in your pocket and go wherever you need to go. At a low point in your day, grab a mini-comic and go to town.
Currently, Silber has multiple mini-comic series going on, including Lost Kisses — which follows a lowly stick figure on his bitter, loathing quest for vengeance on a hated ex girlfriend; as well as Worms — a nightmare of a story that sees a girl waking up in a mysterious hospital, tied to her bed and attached to an IV with worms in it that slowly work their way into her system. [...]

Talk Tiny To Me #1: So You Want To Paint A Mini
You’ve seen them on gaming tables or in display cases, preserved and painted to amazing quality. If you’re a Dungeons & Dragons player like myself, odds are you have one of your own to represent your fantasy persona. They come separately packaged or in multi-figure kits, typically sculpted from plastic or pewter. These days, they can even be bought pre-painted for the avid gamer who would rather spend more time rolling dice than sitting at a painting table.
But where’s the fun in that?
If you’ve ever looked at a beautifully painted miniature and said to yourself, “I wanna do THAT!” then this, my friend, is the column for you.
I’m sure some of you may be thinking, “There’s no way I could ever be able to paint like that,” but don’t be discouraged! The people who do those incredible paint jobs started off just like you, and with the right guidance and plenty of practice, you could be giving them a run for their money in no time.
For the duration of this column, I will be discussing the techniques of painting your own miniature. I do not profess to being a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but that is the beauty of this rewarding and relaxing hobby… You don’t have to be a professional to share the tips and techniques that you’ve discovered! [...]
