Flashback: Metallica’s Video For The Traditional Irish Song ‘Whiskey in the Jar’

Empress Eve   |

Metallica Whiskey in the Jar

Any of you out there old enough to remember a time when Metallica proclaimed that they would never make music videos? That was a long time ago, back before they did their first video for the song “One” off their 1988 album …And Justice For All (and what an awesome video it was). Since then, they’ve made plenty more, some of which we probably could have done without (“Until It Sleeps”?).

For St. Patrick’s Day in 1999, Metallica released the music video for their cover of Irish rockers Thin Lizzy’s rendition of the Irish traditional tune “Whiskey in the Jar.” The song was one of 27 tracks off the band’s cover album, Garage Inc., and went on to earn Metallica a Grammy in 2000 for Best Hard Rock Performance. The video for “Whiskey in the Jar” features the members of Metallica — including Jason Newsted on bass — performing as the band at a rowdy all-female house party.

Watch the Metallica “Whiskey in the Jar” video here below [...]

A St. Patrick's Day Message From The International Space Station

NASA has posted a video message for St. Patrick’s Day from Expedition 27 Flight Engineer Catherine Coleman, who’s currently aboard the International Space Station.

Watch the video here below.

Coleman, who is part Irish, brought with her on her ISS mission several Irish flutes, courtesy of the Dublin-based group The Chieftains. In the video, she talks a little bit about the instruments and then plays them as she floats inside the space station [...]

Check Out Iron Maiden Mascot Eddie During Carnival In Rio

Empress Eve   |

Iron Maiden The Trooper Eddie

Iron Maiden‘s mascot Eddie is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable and popular figures in heavy metal. The band’s album covers have depicted Eddie as a killer, a mental patient, a soldier, a time-traveler, and much more. During live performances when a massive Eddie comes strolling onto the stage, the crowd goes wild.

Recently, Eddie ended up in Rio De Janeiro during Carnival, the famous annual pre-Lent celebration.

Check out a photo here below via the Iron Maiden Facebook page of Eddie colored purple with microphone in hand during the Carnival celebration [...]

Listen To ‘Beauty and The Beast’ ROCKS! For Valentine’s Day

Empress Eve   |

Beauty And The Beast

We’ve featured TheHumanTim’s “ROCKS!” versions of various TV theme songs and other tunes, so for Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing with you his cover of the theme song for Disney’s animated feature Beauty and the Beast (one of my favorite Disney movies!).

While Tim’s rockin’ renditions are always entertaining, today’s installment has some special meaning to it: it contains a message about his co-worker’s 2-year-old niece, Jasmine, who has cancer. In the video, Tim is seen wearing a pink “Jasmine Strong” bracelet to encourage her and her family to keep on fighting. Visit jasminestrong.blogspot.com for information on how Jasmine’s situation and how you can help, including getting one of these pink bracelets [...]

Star Trek - Night of the Living Trekkies

If you’re looking for the perfect geeky boy-meets-girl story to read for Valentine’s Day, look no further than Night Of The Living Trekkies by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall, where a Star Trek knowledgeable bellhop and a Slave Leia booth babe meet up at a Star Trek convention that’s about to be invaded by zombies!

Grab it for your Kindle so you can read it immediately. Some Kindle devices have the text-to-speech feature, which is enabled for this book, so you can turn that on and you and your sweetheart can listen to the robot read you the book! Or, if you’re real fancy, curl up with your soulmate and a trusty phaser and listen to the Audio Book together. Geek love, ain’t it grand?

For more on my thoughts on the book, check out the review I did for Night Of The Living Trekkies when it was first released back in 2010 [...]

Check Out These Misfits Valentine’s Day Items

Empress Eve   |

The Misfits Valentine's Day

While writing up a recent story about how The Misfits’ new double-live CD, Dea.d. Alive, is streaming online for free right now, I noticed that the band’s official site had an ad up about some limited-edition Valentine’s Day items.

One of these limited edition holiday items is The Misfits Fiend Valentine T-Shirt, which features the band’s familiar skeletal Fiend mascot inside a red bleeding heart (with the band logo on the back in red).

The ad (as seen here above) also had the same red heart design on a black mug, and let me tell you… I want that mug, I need that mug!!! [...]

Holiday Geek Gift Guide: Batman

The city calm, and the night is dark, but there’s a gloom on the horizon of the newly fallen snow. It’s with this that you realize that there are very few shopping days left until the holidays are over. Well, chances are you’ve got a Batman fan in your life on some level whether they be hardcore fans, new comers or simply a casual gent or lady that enjoys the movies. Well, have I got some last minute, easy as pecan pie solutions for you! Below are several gift ideas that can be presented to your loved ones. One thing that should be mentioned about the below list is that pretty much nothing needs deep understanding of the character’s history. These are pretty safe gifts for any Batfan that you may know, no matter how hardcore. Anyway, let’s get on with this gift guide, shall we?

ABSOLUTE EDITIONS

The thing about Absolute Editions is that, even if I personally don’t like the story, I want the Absolute Edition. Does that make sense? Let me explain. Absolute Editions are presented in the giant hardcover that basically is the same size as the original art, but it’s completely colored and printed on extremely high quality paper. So, any imaginable detail in the art can be experienced, and usually only the most high profile stories with incredibly talented creative teams get the Absolute treatment. Plus, in these editions, there are loads of bonus features that liken them to the most ultimate editions of movie releases. So, with that, let’s move on to the two Batman specific ones on this list. [...]
