CES 2017: Bosch’s Plan For IOT? How About Everything
DwayneD   |  @   |

Bosch Connect Everything

There are a LOT of companies peddling products here at CES. We’ve got smart cameras that auto-send images to Facebook and double-washing machines that allow you to clean two separate loads of clothes at once without ruining them or taking up more space.

But among all of the keynotes, Bosch stuck out, as board member Werner Struth spoke about their plans for the future. The private company’s leader of North and South American operations managed to speak with certainty not about the next whizbang product or another device was going to be the next big thing, but rather about how combining two mundane technologies (home appliances and internet connectivity) and ending up with extraordinary products. He’s spent the last year “figuring out how technology can do better for all of us.”

CES 2017: iKeybo: The Light Keyboard (Literally)
DwayneD   |  @   |

iKeybo Light Keyboard #1

Somewhere and sometime in some imagined future, protagonists in fashionable yet slightly over-fitted clothing have stealthily stolen in to some grand facility, mercilessly protected by a merciless faction, hell bent on doing something dastardly. They access a panel with their device and a keyboard is projected onto the surface in front of them.

Or maybe that was me and a few other reporters gathered around the founder of a Kickstarter campaign here at CES 2017. Serafim Technologies, a Taiwanese-based company led by CEO GZ Chen, has a new toy called iKeybo in store for all those who’ve imagined what it would be like to set words down my tapping nothing but mere light.

CES 2017: Talk To Your TV: Dish Unveils Integration With Amazon Echo
DwayneD   |  @   |

Amazon Echo & Dish Hopper

In case you needed another reason to go Alexa rather than Google, the media gods have got one for you. The avalanche of CES 2017 press conferences hadn’t even begun when the news came in from Dish Network. In addition to their Sling Box and their 2014 breakthrough, no-contract live-streaming cable service, SlingTV, Dish decided to take another leap forward in delivering television entertainment to their consumers — support for Amazon‘s Alexa Voice Services or AVS.

Dish users with Hopper DRV devices of any generation will be able to control them using their voice through Amazon’s Echo or Echo Dot hardware.

NY Wintercon 2016: Comic Books, Art, and Merchandise

Wintercon 2016

Many people attend conventions in hope of meeting their favorite celebrities and hearing cool stories in panels or Q&As. But for many geeks out there, conventions are the place to be for cool merchandise, comics, and a chance to meet and support favorite and independent artists in the Artist Alley. Earlier this month, I attended NY Wintercon at the Resorts World Casino NYC in Queens, NY and after covering my panels and conducting a few interviews, I did what many fans did — I hit the convention floor to do some holiday shopping for both my family… and for myself.

NY Wintercon 2016: Women Of Sci-fi Panel With ‘Star Trek’ Alum Nichelle Nichols
Dr. Zaius   |  @   |

NY Wintercon 2016 Women of Sci-fi

The worlds of sci-fi and fantasy came together for NY Wintercon early this month. One of the main stage panels featured a who’s who of legendary women from the genre. Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek), Adrienne Barbeau (Swamp Thing, The Fog), and Virginia Hey (Road Warrior, Farscape) joined for a discussion of their famous roles, legacies, and importance of being women in the industry.

NY Wintercon 2016: ‘The Warriors’ Reunion Panel

Wintercon 2016: The Warriors Reunion panel

NY Wintercon took over the Resorts World Casino in NYC earlier this month and one of the main attractions was a full-scale reunion for The Warriors, the 1979 film directed by Walter Hill.

Moderated by The Furies (in spectacular cosplay), the arch rival gang of the Coney Island Warriors, the panel welcomed James Remar (Ajax), Michael Beck (Swan), David Harris (Cochise), Dorsey Wright (Cleon), Terry Michos (Vermin), and Thomas Waites (Fox). The panel was entirely Q&A with fans, which was cool since the Main Stage area was packed with Warriors fans, many in full cosplay.

NY Wintercon 2016 Interview: Scream Queen Adrienne Barbeau
Dr. Zaius   |  @   |

Adrienne Barbeau The Fog

One of the highlights of NY Wintercon 2016 at Resorts World Casino in Queens last weekend were, in fact, the queens themselves — the scream queens, that is. The convention honored and celebrated the best in science fiction and fantasy and amongst the guests was the Queen of Horror and a legend in the business, Adrienne Barbeau. Barbeau has spent the better part of 40 years in TV and films and many of those years were spent in the horror and sci-fi genre in classics like The Fog, Escape From New York, Swamp Thing, and Creepshow. I caught up with her at her at the convention, where I was able to snag a short interview one with my favorite scream queens.

Star Wars Han Solo and Chewbacca Image

The Resorts World Casino NYC in Queens hosted this year’s NY Wintercon, featuring science fiction, fantasy, and comic book properties. One of the highlights of Day 1 on Saturday was the panel featuring the most popular sci-fi franchise ever, Star Wars.

Starting off the day on the main stage was Chewbacca himself, Peter Mayhew, who was joined by a squadron of rebel pilots including Biggs Darklighter (Garrick Hagon), Nien Numb (Mike Quinn), and Red 4 (Jack Klaff).
