I loved the original 1992 Anno Dracula novel by British writer Kim Newman. Let’s just get that out of the way, okay? So it stands to reason that I would jump at the chance to review the new comic book Anno Dracula: 1895: Seven Days In Mayhem #1, right? Well, you would correct. And for a fan like me, the comic was pretty much what I would want and expect. But for the first-time reader, not so much.

Pulp fiction is making a comeback! To be completely honest, I’m not sure if that is true or if I am just spouting alternative facts. Point is, I have been a fan of the Doc Savage franchise literally for decades and it’s resurgence is most exciting for me. This newest revival from Dynamite Entertainment comes in the form of Doc Savage: The Ring Of Fire #1!

The one thing that sticks out, at least with me, is the sheer number of times this character has been given new origins or has be revamped (no pun intended) over the decades. To be fair though, most don’t deal with the future like Vampirella 2017 #1 does here. She has changed much over the decades, but has always remained a kick ass vampire that takes no crap from anyone.

Okay, so confession time. I am not a fan of the Charmed franchise, best known for the television series which ran from 1998 to 2006 on The WB (before it eventually became The CW). I tried to like it but it wasn’t really my cup of tea, so to speak. My wife on the other hand, loved the TV series and every single novel that I could find that featured these witches. But as it holds such a special place in her heart, I decided to show it some love here. Without further ado, I would like to introduce you to Charmed: A Thousand Deaths #1 from Dynamite Entertainment.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could literally see the evil in the world? What if the evil that was in mankind was there by their choice? Maybe they made a bargain of sorts? Well, Darkness Visible #1, from writers Mike Carey (Unwritten, Lucifer, Girl with All the Gifts) and Arvind Ethan David (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), explores something quite similar to that concept. For you see, the evil does walk among us! In many cases, they are us.

Fifteen years ago, a new comic book miniseries from IDW Publishing hit the shelves taking us to Barrow, Alaska, North America’s northernmost community, where the temperatures range from “cold as shit to fucking freezing,” and each year, the Sun does not rise for 30 straight days. The series begins on the last day of sunshine before the month of darkness begins, but this time around, vampires have arrived for unhampered access to sustenance of the human variety.

That 3-issue miniseries was 30 Days of Night and it put horror writer Steve Niles and artist Ben Templesmith on the map.

Is it just me or is everything taking a turn for the darker side lately? Well, I can tell you that Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Big Lie #1 is certainly following that trend. This is nothing at all like the books I grew up reading in the seventies. As a matter of fact, it feels like it would make a rather successful television show on the CW.

Over thirty years since the release of the original film and the franchise still holds just as much magic for me now as it did then. I speak, of course, of the movie Highlander. With the release of this newest comic Highlander: The American Dream #1, I find myself drawn back into the world of sword swinging immortals and their quest to be the last of their kind. As it is so eloquently put: “There can be only one.”

Bond. James Bond. Iconic and straightforward, just like the man himself. As a matter of fact, this might be both his greatest strength and most crippling weakness. Every kid I knew grew up loving the Arthurian legends. I’m still a little enthralled by them, mainly because of the rousing adventures that dealt with swords and sorcery. From Sir Thomas Mallory to T.H. White to Mary Stewart to Marion Zimmer Bradley, these stories have been told and retold from a variety of viewpoints over the years. So it should come as no surprise that we now get an even more modern take in The Once and Future Queen #1.
