Anne Rice Plans To Bring ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ To Television

Anne Rice The Vampire Chronicles books

It was over two years ago that Universal Studios and Imagine Entertainment optioned the rights to Anne Rice‘s Vampire Chronicles with the intent to make film adaptations from the popular novels. Now, the author has revealed that the theatrical rights to the books are back in her hands, and she plans to bring the story to television.

Rice posted to her Facebook page that she and her writer son Christopher Rice will be developing a pilot script, as well as a detailed outline, for an open-ended Game of Thrones-style television series that will be faithful to the tale of the vampire Lestat. This is the opposite of the potential Twilight-like franchise Universal reportedly had been aiming for when they held the rights.

Author Anne Rice announced this week that a follow-up to her 2014 novel Prince Lestat is coming out this Fall.

Titled Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, Rice’s 36th book and the next installment in her wildly popular and successful Vampire Chronicles series, will be released by Random House in Hardcover, Paperback, and Kindle on November 29, 2016. Pre-order is available now.

Universal Options Anne Rice’s ‘The Vampire Chronicles’

Anne Rice The Vampire Chronicles books

Anne Rice‘s Vampire Chronicles will make its return to the big screen, thanks to Universal Pictures, which just picked up the filming rights to the popular novel series for Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment, according to Variety.

Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will produce the films, which will include the adapted screenplay written by Rice’s son, author Christopher Rice, for the fourth novel, Tale of the Body Thief that Grazer and Imagine had optioned back in 2012.

In an announcement earlier this year that delighted many, Rice revealed that her next book, Prince Lestat: The Vampire Chronicles (due out this October), will see the return of vampire Lestat de Lioncourt and will be a sequel to her first five vampire books through the fifth novel, 1995′s Memnoch the Devil, and is a “true sequel” to 1988′s Queen Of The Damned.

Best-selling author Anne Rice announced on Sunday that her next novel will see the return of the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt in Prince Lestat: The Vampire Chronicles, and will be a sequel to her first five vampire books through the fifth novel, 1995’s Memnoch the Devil and is a “true sequel” to 1988’s Queen Of The Damned.

The new book, which will be released on October 28, 2014 by Alfred A. Knopf, will be part The Vampire Chronicles, Rice’s book series which began with 1976’s Interview With The Vampire. The author broke the news on The Dinner Party with Christopher Rice and Eric Shaw Quinn, a podcast co-hosted by her son and fellow author Christopher Rice.

Before the adaptation of Anne Rice‘s popular novel Interview with the Vampire hit the big screen in 1994, there was much controversy surrounding the casting of Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat. Rice publicly stated her displeasure with the filmmaker’s choosing Cruise over her personal selection, Julian Sands (Warlock).

But before Cruise was locked in for the film, Al Pacino had reportedly expressed interest in playing Lestat, so artist Miles Teves provided a concept sketch of the actor as Lestate for the film studio. Check out the sketch in full here below.
