DCEU: Geoff Johns and John Berg Bring Hope For WB’s DC Films

Justice League team first look DCEU

Warner Bros. released two more DC Extended Universe films this year — Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, both of which performed modestly at the box office but were poorly received by critics alike. But since Geoff Johns and Jon Berg came in as co-heads for the DCEU, Wonder Woman and Justice League have never looked more promising. The two upcoming films look to be straying away from the grim and dark tone set up with the previous movies, including the one that launched the current DCEU, Man of Steel. And now we are getting a better picture of how their influence will impact the future of the DCEU films. Check out what they had to say here below.

James Wan Says Aquaman Is The Wolverine Of The DCEU

Things may not be looking good for the DCEU right now, but the future does look bright thanks to the studio making the necessary adjustments to steering the ship in the right direction. The studio brought in promising filmmakers to direct the respective films, and hiring Geoff Johns and Jon Berg was an excellent decision that will hopefully better guide products like Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

One of those promising filmmakers actually has proven himself to the studio with a couple of hit films. James Wan has given Warner Bros. one hit after another with his great horror flicks, and after proving himself able to direct a film with a larger budget – and under terrible circumstances – it only seemed right that he be rewarded for his efforts with a superhero tentpole.

Aquaman isn’t quite ready to hit theaters just yet, but we will get a better introduction of him in Justice League. Now, Wan is raising expectations of the character pretty high with comments like “he’s kind of the Wolverine in some respect.” More on the story below.

Jason Momoa’s King Of Atlantis Will Battle Black Manta In ‘Aquaman’
BAADASSSSS!   |

Aquaman

Suicide Squad is out and kicking butt at the box office despite withering reviews. Wonder Woman is in post-production and expected to be one of the big blockbusters of next summer. Justice League is still filming and hopes to pack theaters and reap riches the following November. Next on deck is Aquaman, which has yet to begin filming under the direction of James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7) but is locking up a fine cast headed by star Jason Momoa (who makes his screen debut as DC Comics’ Atlantean warrior king in Justice League).

Now it has been revealed which villain Aquaman will oppose in his first big screen solo adventure: Black Manta, one of Arthur Curry’s greatest foes. More below.

WB Hires Jon Berg, Geoff Johns To Oversee Future DC Movies

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice

No matter how you look at it, Warner Bros.’ recent decisions have been a result of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s disappointing performance at the box office and less than warm critical reception. The studio will be releasing fewer films and focus on their blockbuster tentpoles. Creative differences forced Seth Grahame-Smith to leave The Flash, while reports said James Wan was “feeling tremendous amounts of trepidation” about directing Aquaman. Wan sent out a comforting tweet reassuring fans he was still on board the project.

Despite the rumors that if BvS didnt’ meet certain box office expectations, WB would have moved forward with other DCEU solo features, the studio marches on with the production of Justice League, and going as far as naming Ben Affleck as an executive producer. He continues “to be supportive of Snyder” and that he’ll work with Snyder and screenwriter Chris Terrio “to make the film the best it can be.”

But it appears as though the changes are not over, as WB is now going to mirror their competitors by creating a brain trust to oversee the DC Extended Universe. More on the story below.

James Wan Reassures Fans He’s Still Directing ‘Aquaman’

James Wan Aquaman

Last weekend, news surfaced that the conflict between Zack Snyder and Warner Bros over the creative vision of Justice League: Part One was having a ripple effect with those involved in the formation of the DCEU. Among those feeling its effects was James Wan, who was rumored to be “feeling tremendous amounts of trepidation” about directing Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa. Naturally, there was a wave of fear that the director would leave his post, which wouldn’t look good for the future of the DCEU now that Seth Grahame-Smith won’t be directing The Flash any longer.

However, it appears the rumors of Wan’s possible departure may have been greatly exaggerated as Wan has responded to these rumors on social media.

Check out what he had to say below.

Despite the mounting rumors that unhappy test audiences could force Warner Bros. to fire Zack Snyder as director of Justice League: Part One, the studio announced him as the film’s helmer. However, a rather disappointing showing at the box office has forced WB to pull back on the number of films they will be releasing, and forcing them to focus more on their franchise tentpoles.

‘The Martian’ Video: Matt Damon Calls Out Aquaman

Matt Damon in The Martian

In what has become a quintessential part of making a “going to space” movie, the dreaded interview process to determine mental faculties is now a staple of the genre. In a new spot for The Martian, we see Matt Damon and crew answer the really tough questions after being isolated for 10 days. Tough questions like…why Aquaman shouldn’t be able to control whales because whales aren’t fish, they’re mammals.

Yeah, this movie is gonna be awesome. Check out the official synopsis and movie spot video below.

James Wan Officially Directing ‘Aquaman’

Jason Momoa Unite The Seven Aquaman Justice League Banner

In April it was reported that Warner Brothers was looking at James Wan to direct Aquaman for them. Now it’s official, as Wan is signed on and locked in for the job. He’ll also be supervising the writing of the film’s script, which is set to be penned by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire).

Wan is best known for his work in the realms of horror, directing Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious, The Conjuring, and Insidious: Chapter 2. He’s also attached to direct the upcoming The Conjuring 2. Wan stepped away from horror last year to direct the latest installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise, Furious 7, replacing the director of the previous four movies in the franchise, Justin Lin.

Warner Bros. Struggles To Create DC Cinematic Universe
eelyajekiM   |

Batman v Superman DC header

Marvel and DC have always had a comic book rivalry, but when it comes to their films, the former always upstages the latter. Since 2008, Marvel has consistantly delivered one successful hit after another, and that success increased tenfold when Disney acquired Marvel, expanding the brand. They already have their plots mapped out until 2028. Warner Bros have pretty much locked themselves in with DC, and have just started to launch their DC Cinematic Universe with Man of Steel. Though the film was a mild success, we will see what the studio has in store for us with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Beyond that, the studios’ future for the DC Cinematic Universe is still very much unclear.

Between directors coming and going, and multiple writers signing on for competition scripts, WB looks like they are making things up for the DC Cinematic Universe as they go, which in the end makes them look like they are struggling to catch up to Marvel Studios. And now insiders and reps are confirming that notion.
