D23 Expo 2017: Pixar’s Untitled Fantasy Set In Suburbia

It really wouldn’t be much of a D23 Expo without the animation studio making a few new announcements. One of those announcements was from Pixar. During the presentation, Pixar head John Lasseter announced an all-new original project from Dan Scanlon (Monsters University) that takes some inspiration from his life story of losing his father at an early age.

The still-untitled film is set in a modern fantasy world where magic used to be a part of life. But because it was hard to do and very complicated, the people lost interest and soon technology took its place. This world is filled with elves, trolls, and sprites, which is something you would see on the side of a 70s van, commented Scanlon. It’s time to scare it up, my fellow geeks! Monsters University sees its home release, and surprisingly, the Blu-ray edition of Pixar’s latest feature is wicked good. Explore Monsters University with me, shall we?

James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) may have given the impression they were always best buddies in Monsters, Inc., but Monsters University proves just the opposite. Travel back in time with Sulley and Mikey to their young adulthood, when Sulley’s pomposity and Mike’s unabashed idealism contrasted with their older personalities. Mike craves to scare for a living, despite his less-than-menacing appearance, and must prove to naysayers that he belongs at the Scare School. He works ceaselessly to understand ways to haunt and chill. Sulley, on the other hand, thinks his family name and reputation will lead him on a road to success, but his egotism impairs his image and potential. The two must collaborate with the non-impressive Oozma Kappa fraternity to save their spots in the Scare School.

Monsters University

Pixar always has something for their fans to look forward to every year, and next year will be the first time the studio has done a prequel. Monsters University will tell the story of Mike and Sully’s academic background. We saw a brief glimpse of what Mike and Sully did during their studies at Monsters University; now Billy Crystal is giving his thoughts on the film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Crystal compared the Dan Scanlon-directed prequel to that of Revenge of the Nerds.
