Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: March 19, 2014
Cover Price: $3.99

Dynamite’s The Shadow is a retelling of the Walter B. Gibson stories best known from radio plays that starred, among others, Orson Wells. As a comic the stories take on a new life. I was a fan of the radio programs so I asked to see what this new Shadow might be. The cover art by Alex Ross is spectacular, invoking the period and sensibility of the 1930s around the start of WWII. I found the heavy-handedness of the line art by Giovanni Timpano to be evocative of the older comics I have seen like Sgt. Rock books from the ’70s.

In 1983, album and book cover designer Dean Motter introduced the world to the mysterious comic book hero, Mister X. The story is set in Radiant City, and in the original series, it is portrayed as a metropolis with major flaws in its architectural design that cause people to suffer various forms of psychoses. One of the first architects of the city, Mister X, sets out to fix the errors and protect the inhabitants. Returning to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Motter and Dark Horse have teamed up once again to create a brand new adventure for the trench coat wearing guardian in Mister X: Eviction.

Mister X: Eviction #1 introduces us to Rosey, an investigative reporter looking to uncover the truth behind the corrupt corporation Central’s plans to rebuild Radiant City with a new “psychetecture”””a design that will give them complete control over the citizen’s minds. Narrating the story through a conversation with a secretive piano man””who happens to look like a live mummy, bandaged completely from head to toe””we learn that the enigmatic Mister X is also investigating the pending atrocity, but believes that Rosey’s curiosity is alerting Central to his own progress. Believing that he has nowhere else to turn, Mister X convinces Mercedes, his ex-girlfriend, to hide essential information that he’s gathered; unfortunately, those he’s fighting against are closing in.

Dark Horse Presents #12Dark Horse Presents #12
Story by John Layman
Art by Sam Kieth
Colors by John Kalisz, Sam Kieth
Cover Art by Sam Kieth
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: May 23, 2012
Cover Price: $7.99

The latest issue of Dark Horse Presents #12 brings you 80 pages of ad-free, full-color illustrated stories, featuring a brand-new Aliens adventure by John Layman and legendary artist Sam Kieth.

Inhuman Condition: Chapter 1 tells the story of Miss Jean DuPaul and Bear, an unlikely duo in that Bear is an inanimate object – a fluffy pink teddy bear to be exact. While we’re only given an 8-page introduction into Layman and Kieth’s new story, it’s clear the series will be filled with plenty of acid-spewing Xenomorphs and synthetic “artificial persons.” It’s hard not to compare Inhuman Condition to those early Dark Horse Aliens mini-series like Aliens: Book One (1988), Aliens: Book Two (1989) and Aliens: Earth War (1990), which Kieth drew for Mark Verheiden.

Miss DuPaul is a woman who has lost her husband and daughter, and all she has left of her family is Bear, the stuffed play-thing that was to be her daughter’s. She’s evacuated from a colony by a task force of androids during a Xenomorph attack.
