Ron Glass as Shepherd Book in Firefly

The year 2016 continues to deal devastating blows. Actor Ron Glass has passed away at the age of 71. He had been battling various illnesses, and ultimately succumbed to respiratory failure.

Glass was someone who meant something to a lot of different people. To many of us geeks, he was Shepherd Derrial Book on Joss Whedon’s cult favorite space western, Firefly, and the movie that followed, Serenity, a soft-spoken older man with a mysterious past and seemingly infinite wisdom and guidance to offer. For those who are a little bit older, Glass was Detective Ron Harris on 164 episodes of Barney Miller, which ran from 1976 to 1982. His work there was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1982, going up against fellow Barney Miller star Steve Landesberg, two stars on M*A*S*H, and Taxi stars Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd, with Lloyd taking home the award.

‘Firefly’ Cast Talks Netflix Not Picking Them Up Yet, Scene We Never Got To See

Firefly

Netflix has been known to bring a deceased TV show back from the dead a time or two over the years. Because of this geeks everywhere, myself very much included, have wondered why they haven’t resurrected one of the most obvious dead series: the criminally canceled Firefly, which wasn’t given long enough to find its audience in a time well before DVRs and on demand and mobile viewing, when the TV viewer numbers were all that mattered. Netflix has touched on why it’s not a show they feel (or felt, a few years back anyway) is right for them, but nothing more has been said of it.

Some of Firefly‘s actual cast members wonder the very same things we fans do about the show, as well. A mini cast reunion with Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau went down recently at which they discussed Netflix, a scene we never got to see, and more.

See what they had to say below.

Firefly -- Captain Mal's Gun

The DIY Prop Shop is back with a new video that fans of Joss Whedon‘s still inexplicably dead space western Firefly will be interested in seeing.

The YouTube series’ latest video will show you how to make your very own prop replica of the recognizable handgun that Captain Malcolm Reynolds (played by Nathan Fillion) wields on the show. It will take a bit of work if you want to pull it off, but it’s a good option if you don’t have the money purchase an actual replica.

You can check out the video below.

Firefly NYCC Panel 1

Years after its cancellation, Firefly is still very much alive. To the delight of fans of the cult hit, New York Comic-Con held a Firefly Reunion panel on Saturday, October 10th. Believe it or not, it’s been 10 years since the release of the show’s companion film, Serenity. Stars Gina Torres, Nathan Fillion, and Jewel Staite were all scheduled to grace the stage for the Q&A, and all three arrived, with the addition of surprise guest Alan Tudyk!

Although Tudyk needed to meet Amy Acker to work on ADR (additional dialogue recorded) for their show, Con Man, he was able to stay for the first 20 minutes of the panel. He thrilled the crowd early on by announcing that “everyone on the stage here is in this season of Con Man.” In fact, viewers can see both Torres and Staite on the show this Wednesday, October 14th.

Joss Whedon in Avengers Age of Ultron

The only question I have is… why hasn’t Joss Whedon received every award that has ever existed in the history of awards? Saturday, he delivered his yearly sermon in Hall H (he skipped last year) AND won the Comic-Con Icon Award (the 9th of its kind). He likes to give his fans what they want – a chance to listen to him speak in that genius voice, and to ask questions about anything and everything, which he is only too happy to answer. But the most important question of the night was:

Who is his favorite character?

The answer is…
