Anne Rice The Vampire Chronicles books

It was over two years ago that Universal Studios and Imagine Entertainment optioned the rights to Anne Rice‘s Vampire Chronicles with the intent to make film adaptations from the popular novels. Now, the author has revealed that the theatrical rights to the books are back in her hands, and she plans to bring the story to television.

Rice posted to her Facebook page that she and her writer son Christopher Rice will be developing a pilot script, as well as a detailed outline, for an open-ended Game of Thrones-style television series that will be faithful to the tale of the vampire Lestat. This is the opposite of the potential Twilight-like franchise Universal reportedly had been aiming for when they held the rights.

Brad Pitt Kirsten Dunst Interview With The Vampire

When Interview With The Vampire hit theaters back in 1994, my young self couldn’t get enough of long-haired Brad Pitt as the vampire Louis. There was one scene where the young Kirsten Dunst gets to kiss Brad Pitt and I remember thinking of the 11-year-old actress, that lucky bitch.

It’s 20 years later, and Dunst recently told Conan O’Brien on Conan that that kiss was her very first one, but that at that age, she thought it was “icky” (!!!!!).

Watch the video interview here below.

Al Pacino as Lestat Interview with the Vampire Concept Art by Miles Teves (cropped)

Before the adaptation of Anne Rice‘s popular novel Interview with the Vampire hit the big screen in 1994, there was much controversy surrounding the casting of Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat. Rice publicly stated her displeasure with the filmmaker’s choosing Cruise over her personal selection, Julian Sands (Warlock).

But before Cruise was locked in for the film, Al Pacino had reportedly expressed interest in playing Lestat, so artist Miles Teves provided a concept sketch of the actor as Lestate for the film studio. Check out the sketch in full here below.

Robert Downey Jr In Talks To Play Lestat In Universal’s ‘Vampire Chronicles’ Reboot

Robert Downey JrBloody Disgusting has confirmed today that Robert Downey Jr is in close talks to play the vampire Lestat in Universal Studios’ planned reboot of the film franchise of Anne Rice‘s Vampire Chronicles.

Rice’s vampire books were previously adapted for the big screen in 1994 with Neil Jordan’s Interview With The Vampire, which starred Tom Cruise as the beautiful blond vamp Lestat (Brad Pitt played the vampire Louis), and then in 2002 with Queen of the Damn, in which Stuart Townsend took over the Lestat role.

Before the Twilight phenomenon, the books of Rice’s Vampire Chronicles were the ultimate in vampire stories next to Dracula, with Lestat being the most desirable of the undead. Fans might remember how badly Rice took the news of Cruise being cast as Lestat in Interview and severely criticized the choice (after seeing the film, she retracted her statements).

Since nabbing the lead in the first Iron Man film, Downey has seemed invincible. It’s not hard to imagine that he can pull off just about any role handed to him. But, Lestat? That just doesn’t seem to add up.
