Firefly's Serenity

Fans of Joss Whedon‘s space western Firefly have been waiting for news like this for well over a decade. Fox says that they’re actually open to reviving the long-dead show.

The news came out of the Television Critics Association 2017 press tour about a month ago, but flew under most radars at the time. Fox Broadcasting president of entertainment David Madden was on hand for a panel, and the status of many projects were discussed. When Firefly came up, Madden surprisingly said they were open to reviving the show, under one condition: Whedon has to be up for doing it.

‘Firefly’ Cast Talks Netflix Not Picking Them Up Yet, Scene We Never Got To See

Firefly

Netflix has been known to bring a deceased TV show back from the dead a time or two over the years. Because of this geeks everywhere, myself very much included, have wondered why they haven’t resurrected one of the most obvious dead series: the criminally canceled Firefly, which wasn’t given long enough to find its audience in a time well before DVRs and on demand and mobile viewing, when the TV viewer numbers were all that mattered. Netflix has touched on why it’s not a show they feel (or felt, a few years back anyway) is right for them, but nothing more has been said of it.

Some of Firefly‘s actual cast members wonder the very same things we fans do about the show, as well. A mini cast reunion with Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau went down recently at which they discussed Netflix, a scene we never got to see, and more.

See what they had to say below.

Firefly NYCC Panel 1

Years after its cancellation, Firefly is still very much alive. To the delight of fans of the cult hit, New York Comic-Con held a Firefly Reunion panel on Saturday, October 10th. Believe it or not, it’s been 10 years since the release of the show’s companion film, Serenity. Stars Gina Torres, Nathan Fillion, and Jewel Staite were all scheduled to grace the stage for the Q&A, and all three arrived, with the addition of surprise guest Alan Tudyk!

Although Tudyk needed to meet Amy Acker to work on ADR (additional dialogue recorded) for their show, Con Man, he was able to stay for the first 20 minutes of the panel. He thrilled the crowd early on by announcing that “everyone on the stage here is in this season of Con Man.” In fact, viewers can see both Torres and Staite on the show this Wednesday, October 14th.

Alan Tudyk's Con Man

We may never see Firefly live and breathe again (unless someone finally wakes up and finds a way to makes it happen for us), but while die hard fans of the series continue to hopelessly wait for that day to arrive something else inspired by Joss Whedon‘s show has been born.

Back in March we found out about Con Man, a web series from Firefly co-stars Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion. Mirroring their previous gig working together, the web series follows actors from a canceled (far too soon) science fiction TV show. The actor who playued the captain on the show (Fillion) goes on to become a big movie star, while the actor who played the pilot (Tudyk) finds himself traveling around making appearances and sci-fi conventions.

A trailer for Con Man was shared during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con—the first web series to have a Hall H panel—and now the trailer is available to enjoy online. You can see it below along with a poster and full synopsis that includes the cast of very familiar names you’ll see in the series.

State of Syn Web Series

It’s a Stargate: Atlantis reunion! Jewel Staite (Stargate‘s Jennifer Keller), David Hewlett (Stargate‘s Rodney McKay), and Rainbow Francks (Stargate‘s Aiden Ford) have all assumed major roles on a new 3D web comic series titled State of Syn. Additionally, fans will be happy to hear the voice of Torri Higginson (Stargate‘s Elizabeth Weir) in the opening narration of each webisode.

This science fiction web drama created by Daniel Dales and Jarett Sherman, features a combination of voice-overs, photography, and comic still drawing and animation. Directed by Jed Weintrob, State of Syn plays out like a live comic in approximately five-minute segments; similar in length to a single issue. The images serve as moving panels, transporting the viewer from one scene to the next. Adding to cross-platform element of the show, the fans can also get involved with an “interactive companion game for IOS and Android devices.”

Curious? See the first two episodes for yourself and read a State of Syn‘s teaser description below.
