Whispers From The Abyss is a short story horror anthology inspired by the master of horror and weird himself, H.P. Lovecraft. This is a massive collection at 33 stories and 200 pages.

While some are surely scarier than others, the majority of this book is worth the money, time, and sanity you’ll invest. Due to the quantity of stories found in Whispers From The Abyss, I’ll only be sharing a few of my favorites based on overall quality — tales that truly had my heart racing and will be forcing me to sleep with one eye open.

In the 1970s, during the Vietnam War, there were many US soldiers who became dependent on opiates, specifically heroin. There were many stories and conspiracy theories surrounding possible CIA involvement in providing the addicted troops with the drug, but whatever the case, many of them came home as addicts. It was a further complication added to their return home from the war, and was an issue that inspired the great Geezer Butler of the band Black Sabbath to write the song “Hand of Doom“.

Set in an unclear timeframe in the future, though presumably not too distant, the War on Terror continues against elements in the Middle East. A mass casualty nuclear explosion in Detroit set off by a terrorist named Abu Rahman, spurs the nation into further fighting in Syria, Iraq, and other nations in the region.

So when the chance to check out a wild and wacky comic from actor Dan Fogler called Moon Lake came around, I was excited to take a peek.

The comic is a collection of short stories, and when I say “wild and wacky” I truly mean it. These stories are completely vulgar and graphic and oozing immaturity, and that can only mean one thing: comedic gold.

From sex-frenzied monkey-peoples at a sex-frenzied summer camp the week before kids arrive to werebears and psycho-killer cheerleaders stuck in a sunshine and rainbows dreamland to a warrior woman and a dinosaur — they’re all in here.
