Rings, the third installment in the American “Ring” series hits theaters everywhere Friday. Fifteen years ago Gore Verbinski‘s The Ring opened, and set off a chain reaction that changed an entire genre. Based on the 1998 Japanese horror film Ringu, directed by Hideo Nakata from the original novel by Koji Suzuki, The Ring terrified viewers here and was a critical and financial success, earning a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes and almost $130 million. That success spawned a whole slew of J-horror knock offs and remakes including The Grudge (2004), Dark Water (2005), Pulse (2006), and the notoriously awful One Missed Call (2008). The sequel, The Ring 2 also came in 2005.

Before we watch Rings Friday, let’s revisit 2002’s The Ring.

The Impossible Movie PosterThe Impossible
Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona
Written by Maria Belon (story), Sergio G. Sanchez (screenplay)
Starring: Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin, Oaklee Pendergast
Apaches Entertainment/Summit Entertainment
Rated PG-13 | 114 Minutes
Release date: January 4, 2013

I can say that since things have died down at work, back to normal hours, and having some extra money due to the extra hours, I have been able to see a nice bunch of movies to start 2013. And hopefully that is a trend that continues for awhile. Although next week is vacation for me and I’ll be spending it in Vegas, so I am not sure if a movie will be watched then.

But I did once again venture off to one of my local Landmark Theaters, the Oriental, to see this movie, The Impossible. There had been some strong buzz for this one going in, and even a little more buzz now after yesterday’s Oscar nominations were announced, with Naomi Watts up for a Best Performance by a Lead Actress nomination for the film.

The Impossible is based on the real life family, the Bennets: Maria (Watts) and Henry (Ewan McGregor), and their three sons, Lucas (Tom Holland) Thomas (Samuel Joslin), and Simon (Oaklee Pendergast). While vacationing in Thailand for Christmas, they were about to become just one of the stories of survival from a 2004 tsunami that devastated the area.

Movie 43 Header- Leslie Libb, Justin Long, Jason Sudeikis

It’s hard to describe a movie like Movie 43, because there is no actual place to start. The comedy is a collection of shorts and skits directed by – take a deep breath now – Patrick Forsberg, Peter Farrelly, Elizabeth Banks, Steven Brill, Steve Carr, Tusty Cundieff, James Duffy, Griffin Dunne, James Gunn, Bob Odenkirk, and Brett Ratner. If you thought the directors list was big, just wait until you see the cast list.

This hilarious red band trailer features comedic acts that can only be described as vulgar, disgusting, provocative, offensive, and other repulsive adjectives you can think of. But it’s all for the sake of comedy, and this red band trailer reveals that Movie 43 has the potential to be a daring comedy. Check out the trailer and the actors involved below.

The film stars so many people, that it’s impossible to fit them in this opening text. Take a deeper breath than the one you took before, as this is the cast of Movie 43

Robert Pattinson

Never in my wildest dreams would I have put Robert Pattinson and Lawrence of Arabia in the same sentence. Well today is the day that wild and crazy dream comes true, because Pattinson is now attached to play T.E. Lawrence, a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia, in Werner Herzog‘s Gertrude Bell biopic, Queen of the Desert.

Pattinson will co-star alongside Naomi Watts, who will play Bell. The movie will chronicle the history of Bell, who was a woman of many skills which included a writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attache for the British Empire.

David Cronenberg’s ‘Eastern Promises’ Sequel Could Finally Happen Next Year

Eastern Promises

David Cronenberg has never shied from making films that explored the darkest recesses of humanity, from the horrors that our bodies can inflict upon us to the moral dilemmas that slowly devour our souls. He has made many great movies and even a few masterpieces. For years Cronenberg had never considered making a sequel to one of his films, but three years ago he first discussed the possibility of a follow-up to his 2007 London-set Russian underworld crime drama Eastern Promises. Another year passed and the subject came up again, but the director had been too busy working on his films A Dangerous Method and Cosmopolis to give the sequel his full attention.

Now it looks like the Eastern Promises sequel is gearing up once more. Claude Brodesser-Akner at Vulture is reporting that Promises co-star Vincent Cassel is in negotiations to join the production, with Cronenberg back in the director’s chair working from a screenplay by Steven Knight – the writer of the original – and Viggo Mortensen starring. There’s still no word on whether or not Eastern Promises female lead Naomi Watts will be returning as well.
