Rings is the third installment of the American “Ring” series which started back in 2002 with the Naomi Watts led, The Ring directed by Gore Verbinski. Perhaps counting on the fact that it’s been 15-years since the original and twelve since the sequel, the creators of Rings open with a scene eschewing all pretense and jump right into exposition from the first line. “Have you ever heard of the videotape where you watch it and die?” People in the theater were cracking up.

King Kong vs. Godzilla! Frankenstein vs. The Wolfman! Freddy vs. Jason! Horror has always managed to take its greatest antagonists and pit them against one another. In 2017 Japan, the battle rages on in Sadako vs Kayako between the two most popular ghosts of the modern J-Horror scene: Sadako, the villainous ghost from Koji Suzuki’s Ring series, and Kayako, the ghost with a grudge from Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On films. These are the two film series that helped launched J-Horror to the United States signaling a host of remakes, including Gore Verbinski’s adaptation The Ring in 2002 and Shimizu’s own remake The Grudge in 2004. Each of those films were insanely popular, grossing well over $100 million and earning sequels. The third installment of The Ring series, Rings, opens in theaters next week, while Sadako vs Kayako debuts today on Shudder, AMC’s horror streaming service.

Rings TV Prank

One of the most popular ways to promote a new horror movie is to set up an elaborate prank and film unsuspecting people getting the life scared out of them in the name of marketing. We’ve seen it with Devil’s Due, Curse of Chucky, Carrie, The Last Exorcism, and The Last Exorcism 2, just to name a few.

The latest prank aims to help get the word out about Rings, a sequel to The Ring and The Ring Two. For the prank, people shopping for a new TV in an electronics store are shocked when the always creepy Samara crawls out of one of the TVs and toward them.

Rings Movie

It’s been 14 years since The Ring, the American remake of the 1998 Japanese horror flick Ringu, was released and became a box office hit. That’s right—you thought that ’80s favorite celebrating its 30-somethingth anniversary made you feel old; just think about those movies from the ’00s you were sure just came out a few years ago getting ready to head off to high school. They grow up so fast. Hell, it’s already been over 11 years since the 2005 sequel was released.

Thankfully for us Paramount Pictures was kind enough to make a third movie in the franchise which hasn’t even come out yet, so we can go back to pretending we’re young again. The trilogy-maker is titled Rings, and Paramount has released the first trailer for the movie.

Click on over to the other side to give it a watch.
