Happy Death Day review

Happy Death Day
Directed by Christopher Landon
Written by Scott Lobdell
Starring Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Charles Aitken, Laura Clifton, Rob Mello
Blumhouse Productions
Rated R | 96 Minutes
Release Date: October 13, 2017

If you’ve watched the trailer for Happy Death Day, then you know exactly what you are walking into. The writer and director make no effort to hide their influences, to the point of literally name-dropping Groundhog Day and Bill Murray IN the movie. One character’s last name is even credited as “Spengler” (Harold Ramis was Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters). That said, if you’re gonna walk the line between parody and homage, you better be careful and to their credit, writer Scott Lobdell and director Christopher Landon do a pretty great job. In order for this to work, like Groundhog Day, the lead character and actor playing them has to be convincing. While I’m not comparing Happy Death Day‘s Jessica Rothe to Bill Murray, she does do one hell of a job here and the results are a perfect little 95-minute meta-slasher film right in time for Halloween.

Their question as they look at this “meteor crash” site is not just what killed the three men, but where did it go?

In previous issues of Homecoming, we were introduced to Celeste Lee, a high school girl who inexplicably showed up at her old house after she went missing ten years earlier. Only now she has strange, alien powers and a bad case of amnesia. The house’s new occupant, Hunter, took in Celeste and enrolled her in high school with him. Now, Celeste’s mother, Carla, shows up and the two try to piece together their experience 10 years ago.

Release Date: August, 15, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Hunter Wilson is your typical American geeky high school student. He worries about getting good grades and getting a date for the big dance, plays lots of video games, and has a blonde attractive alien lady show up stark naked in his swimming pool. Wait, what?? I smell a premise. Thankfully, it is in an endearing one in the capable hands of writers David Wohl and Scott Lobdell who seem to really dig aliens and teenagers in the least creepy way possible.

To to set up Homecoming #1, readers are given a magazine article from ten years ago which explains that a mother and daughter went missing under unusual circumstances. It seems it could have been Mom’s abusive boyfriend or an alien spacecraft. When Celeste Lee, the little girl who disappeared ten years ago, shows up at Hunter’s house with only the knowledge that she was with scary folks, she has returned to her old home for a reason, and has super powers, it is obvious which culprit for the kidnapping seems to be the best choice.

Night of the Owls by Greg Capullo

Following the lead in Scott Snyder’s current run on Batman, DC Comics has posted a graphic containing all of the titles that will be participating in the Batman crossover event Night of the Owls.

Night of the Owls started this week with a prelude in Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows’ Nightwing #8 which kickstarted the first issue in the crossover event, Batman #8 by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. The concept of the mini-event is that Gotham City has a sordid past that even Bruce Wayne was unaware of. The Court of Owls, an evil group of assassins, has been controlling the fate of Gotham the entire time. There’s much more to the story including Dick Grayson’s lineage and an all out assault against the Wayne family and other leaders of Gotham City. It’s a war of Bats vs. Owls when most of the Bat-family is called upon to participate.
