Is it just me or does there seem to be an uptick in the number of Sherlock Holmes adaptations/re-imaginings of late? Movies, television, comics, you name it. Luckily, quite a few of them have been entertaining and, in some cases, astounding. It seems only fair then that we have a version for all ages, one that the kiddos will enjoy and with which they might identify. Kid Sherlock #1 fits the bill with plenty to offer all readers.

While Holmes and Watson planned to return home once the job was done, they bump into one of the doctor’s old acquaintances and his colleagues, who convince them to delay their departure until later in the day, though Holmes seems none too pleased about it. While they dine inside, a terrifying creature bounds through the city, leaping across rooftops during an electrical storm, frightening the citizens, who refer to it as “Spring-heeled Jack.”

Anytime there is an offer to review a story involving The Great Detective, I jump in with both feet. Sherlock Holmes: The Liverpool Demon #1 is no exception to that rule, but it is an exceptional story – one that is sure to please Sherlockians everywhere.

Reuniting the awesome team of Leah Moore and John Reppion to pen this mini-series was a stroke of brilliance, as their grasp of the Victorian age is well suited for comics. They have a way of conveying the dirtiness and griminess of the time through well-written characters and dialogue. From mannerisms to mode of speech, the reader is made to feel as if they are right there in that time and place. The story is captivating and intriguing, two things that make for a great gothic mystery.

Comic Review: Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights #2

Written by Ken Janssens

Letters by Bernie Lee
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

I have long been a fan of all things Holmesian, even the ridiculously overzealous films of the last few years. I’ve read everything I could get my hands on for decades and comics are no exception. It seems like Bluewater Comics is trying to build a library of literary figures and who better to add to that collection than the world famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights #2 drops us into the plot right after Angela Farrell, a local “working girl” has been murdered. Much action ensues… We have a royal carriage being vandalized by local anti-monarchists, which turns out to be less than what it appears. Even the death of the prostitute is not what it seems. The twisting plot is definitely an homage to the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Virginia School Board Bans Sherlock Holmes Mystery ‘A Study in Scarlet’
BAADASSSSS!   |

Sherlock Holmes A Study in Scarlet

A Study in Scarlet, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s first novel featuring his legendary detective Sherlock Holmes — which was first published in 1887 — has been removed from the sixth-grade reading curriculum by the county school board of Albemarle, VA, after voting on it last Thursday for reasons that have attracted controversy to the famed mystery in the past, according to an article at the Los Angeles Times’ Nation Now blog.

Doyle’s extremely negative portrayal of Mormonism as a religion dominated by those who would commit acts of murder, kidnapping, and enslavement to protect their ideals has long been criticized by followers of the Mormon religion. But according to several sources, including Doyle’s own daughter and Levi Edgar Young, a descendant of Mormon leader Brigham Young, Doyle had admitted in the years following the publication of A Study in Scarlet that at the time he wrote it his attitude toward the Church of Latter-Day Saints had been swayed by how the Church was being portrayed in the press. The author had even apologized.

New ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Novel Endorsed By Conan Doyle Estate Announced
Tom Cheredar   |

Conan Doyle Estate Official SealA new Sherlock Holmes novel — the first officially endorsed by the estate of original author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle — is coming to book shelves soon, announced Orion Publishing House.

Written by children’s author Anthony Horowitz, who is known for his past work on the book series about teenage spy Alex Rider, the new novel will be true to the original material as much as possible.

“My Holmes is going to be exactly the Holmes of the (original) novels without any new information on my part,” Horowitz said in an interview with BBC. “I don’t want to take any liberties with this great iconic figure.”

Having grown up reading the Sherlock Holmes novels, Horowitz said he couldn’t resist the opportunity to write a brand new adventure. “My aim is to produce a first rate mystery for a modern audience while remaining absolutely true to the spirit of the original.”
