Empress Eve’s Top 10 Favorite Movies Of 2016

Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2016

Now that 2016 is behind us, it’s time for me to reveal my favorite Movies of 2016. On a global level, the year 2016 will go down in history as a difficult one, where we lost a lot of talented people and there seemed to be an overall negativity in the air (thanks in part to the general election here in the U.S). On a personal level, 2016 was not only difficult, but sorrowful, as I lost my father to cancer. My dad loved movies, and every time we got together, we would discuss the films we had recently seen. Dad got sick early in the year, so we didn’t get to have our usual movie pow-wows.

My top movies are always of the blockbuster, superhero, scifi/fantasy variety, with some comedies sprinkled in, because I like to rewatch movies, so I tend to pick more uplifting titles as “favorites” — therefore, I’m not saying my list is of the “best” movies, they are just the ones I enjoyed the most and will likely rewatch to my heart’s content.

Star Trek: Discovery

Last week it was reported that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh had been cast as a captain in the new Star Trek TV series Star Trek: Discovery. This casting has now been confirmed by CBS, but the character is slightly different than initially reported. Yeoh will be playing the Starfleet captain of the starship Shenzhou, as previously stated. However, her character will be named Captain Georgiou and not Han Bo.

Also announced is that Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp have joined Yeoh on the cast. Jones will be playing a Starfleet science officer named Lt. Saru, who’s also part of an alien species new to the Trek universe. Rapp also plays a science officer, named Lt. Stamets, who’s an astromycologist and fungus expert.

Star Trek: The Animated Series Blu-ray Edition box set

Star Trek: The Animated Series
The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek
Blu-ray Edition
Created by Gene Roddenberry
Directed by Hal Sutherland, Bill Reed
Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Majel Barrett
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release Date: November 15, 2016

When the original Star Trek was cancelled in 1969 after three seasons, it left a void with fans who wanted NBC to renew the television series about the starship Enterprise and its crew’s five-year mission to explore new worlds and new civilizations. Audiences grew to love William Shatner‘s Captain Kirk and his first officer, the half-human half-Vulcan Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, but the ratings just weren’t high enough after the show was moved for the third season to a Friday night “death” slot. While Star Trek got to live on in syndication, it wasn’t until 1973 that new life was breathed into it with Star Trek: The Animated Series, produced by Filmation, the company behind Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.

Star Trek: Discovery

When it was announced that Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) would be acting as showrunner for Star Trek Discovery, fans were excited at what he would bring to their beloved franchise. Since they got their first look at the show at SDCC and learned how the show would “explore stories from a different point of view,” fans have been eagerly awaiting the pilot, which will air on CBS, with subsequent episodes airing on the CBS All Access streaming platform. However, significant delays have forced CBS to pull Fuller from his duties as showrunner. More on the story below.

Star Trek Encyclopedia

The Star Trek Encyclopedia
A Reference Guide to the Future, Revised and Expanded Edition
2-Volume Hardcover Set
By Michael Okuda, Denise Okuda
Publisher: Harper Design
Release Date: October 18, 2016

A well-stocked English-language home library likely contains such reference books as The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Roget’s International Thesaurus, Strunk & White’s Elements of Style, Encyclopedia of World History, and Oxford’s Atlas of the World. Now, it’s time to make room on that shelf for the newly Revised and Expanded Edition of The Star Trek Encyclopedia, released by Harper Design in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Authors Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda originally created The Star Trek Encyclopedia back in 1994, packing it with references to all the Star Trek television series and films up until that point. (You might remember the authors from their contributions to the Bonus Features on several Trek television series DVDs, especially the 2006 remastered Original Series.) The book was eventually reprinted in 1997, and in 1999, an Updated and Expanded Edition added in a 128-page addendum to include information through the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the fifth season of the Star Trek: Voyager television series, as well as the film Star Trek: Insurrection.
