Fifteen years ago, a new comic book miniseries from IDW Publishing hit the shelves taking us to Barrow, Alaska, North America’s northernmost community, where the temperatures range from “cold as shit to fucking freezing,” and each year, the Sun does not rise for 30 straight days. The series begins on the last day of sunshine before the month of darkness begins, but this time around, vampires have arrived for unhampered access to sustenance of the human variety.

That 3-issue miniseries was 30 Days of Night and it put horror writer Steve Niles and artist Ben Templesmith on the map.

The Disciples #1
Written by Steve Niles
Art by Christopher Mitten
Colors by Jay Fotos
Letters by Thomas Mauer
Black Mask Studios
Release Date: May 27, 2015
Cover Price: $3.99

Part bounty hunter saga with nods to Alien and Firefly, The Disciples starts off with a slow build that turns into a big bang in the first issue of what may shape up to be a very exciting series.

The Disciples #1 starts with three companions heading to Ganymede, one of Jupiter’s moons. It and the other moons in the solar system have recently been colonized in a Gold Rush-style land rush. Ganymede was settled by a religious cult (that started in Florida, obviously). One of the members of this cult is the daughter of a senator, and our three heroes have been sent to bring her back. Of course, the start of their journey doesn’t go as planned, and right from the beginning they encounter one creepy-ass alien who does not seem to come in peace.

Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: March 12, 2014
Cover Price: $3.99

Don’t you just love it when something great just comes together? Take Nosferatu Wars, for instance. Originally published in four parts in Dark Horse Presents #26-#29, this comic is a perfect example of a classic vampire story. And what makes it even better is the way the creators twist this tale to bring us something completely out of this world.

Centered around two vampires, Tarquin and Moira, we are given a story of unfettered bloodlust and carnage mingled with a love affair that has stretched for ages. The setting is the old world and the time is that of the Black Death. Using this horrible plague as a cover for their nightly exploits, the two undead lovers travel towards the estate of a nobleman with deadly purpose.

Upon arrival there, they are faced with seemingly overwhelming odds that quickly turn in their favor thanks to their strength and ruthlessness. Slaying much of the household, they present the lord of the manor with a proposition, one he quickly accepts. But as with all things, the devil is in the details as he soon finds out.
