Riz Ahmed In Talks For Venom

We’ve known for a few months now that Mad Max: Fury Road and The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy will play the title character in Sony’s long-planned Spider-Man spinoff Venom.

Now it looks like Hardy has his first co-star, as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Riz Ahmed is currently in talks for a role in the movie.

Sony Has Plans To Expand Their Spider-Man-Less Spinoff Universe
eelyajekiM   |

Venom

Spider-Man recalls that there was a point in time when Sony had the ambitious plans of creating a cinematic universe on the back of the fairly weak Amazing Spider-Man movies. Those plans never came to fruition, and the studio was forced to scale back on the plans, even resorting to sharing the Webslinger with their Marvel competitors over at Disney.

However, that deal worked out in both of their favors, and with Spider-Man: Homecoming being such a huge success, Sony can look forward to building a Spider-Man-less cinematic universe using supporting characters like Venom, Silver Sable, and Black Cat. The studio has already announced that there will be two films based on those characters, and they intend to announce a few more in the coming months. More on this story below.

Carnage To Be Villain To Tom Hardy’s ‘Venom’
The Movie God   |

Venom and Carnage

We found out just last month that Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, and Inception star Tom Hardy was set to star in the R-rated Spider-Man spinoff Venom with Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer behind the camera.

Going with the R-rating—with confidence gained from the successful releases of Deadpool and Logan—is a great start. Now it looks like another step in the right direction has been taken. There was a rumor a few years back (when the movie was going to be co-written and directed by The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman) that the movie could feature none other than Carnage, and it appears that will be the case.

‘Venom’: Tom Hardy To Star In Spider-Man Spinoff With Ruben Fleischer Directing
eelyajekiM   |

Venom

This year, Sony started to develop spinoffs based on Spider-Man supporting characters. This has been something that Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman and the studio has been cooking up for quite some time. While Sony has the authority to approve these spinoffs, they won’t officially be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – even though Spider-Man has already joined it.

Venom will reportedly be the first of the spinoffs to be released, with a Black Cat and Silver Sable film to follow. And now we know who will play Venom and who will direct the film as well. According to various reports, Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road) will play the title character, while Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) will direct. Rumor: Sony Wants ‘Venom’ As An R-Rated Movie
eelyajekiM   |

Venom

Spider-Man continues to be Sony’s flagship superhero. But now that studios are in the business of shared universes, Sony wants to cash in on the same success they are having. However, their first attempt was less than successful thanks in no small part to The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s underperforming box office numbers. But now that they are sharing the Webslinger with Marvel Studios, they are going to take another stab at it starting with Venom.

More on the story below.

NYCC 2015: Cosplay and Convention Floor Photos

NYCC 2015 Cosplay

“You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy…”

This weekend the most diverse collection of individuals on our planet have gathered together in New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for this year’s New York Comic-Con. And a group of our contributing GoDs — (Athena, Danny, Sarah, Max, Eve, and me, Dave3, to be exact) — are here to provide coverage of all the goings-on of NYCC 2015.

Among my favorite things to do is walk the convention floor, checking out all the goodies, meeting artists, creators, exhibitors, fans, and cosplayers. And of course, taking pictures along the way. And I spent the majority of today doing exactly that: perusing the aisles of the convention floor, taking in the sites, the sounds, and the smells of the ever-growing yearly Geekdom collective.

Today’s highlights include a run-in with the Baseball Furies from The Warriors, Princess Sparklefist herself Captain Marvel, and the amazingly amusing webslinger amalgam, Spider-Met!

Anyhoo, hit the jump and check out my photo galleries from today.

Spider-Man Deal: Financial Details, ‘Amazing Spider-Man 3,’ ‘Venom,’ More
eelyajekiM   |

Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man

This deal just keeps getting better all the time. Disney has deep pockets, you’d think that Sony would ask the rival studio to pony up some cash to regain the rights to Spider-Man. Well, if you’re already thinking of a number in the billions, you might want to take it down all the way to zero.

Hours after it was announced that Disney would be “sharing” Spider-Man with Sony, details about the deal are being revealed. First up came info regarding when Spidey might make his Marvel debut, whether Andrew Garfield will still be playing the role of Spider-Man, and if the Sinister Six movie was still on or not.

Now new details have arrived, this time revealing some of the financial details of the deal and the status of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and other spinoffs like Venom. More on all of this after the jump.

Sony Rumored To Be Working On An All-Female Spider-Man Film
eelyajekiM   |

In the past few weeks, Marvel and Warner Bros. have dropped huge bombs on their fans by making massive superhero announcements. Fox seems content with what they have in terms of X-Men and Fantastic Four, but it seems that Sony is in a bit of trouble with Spider-Man. We didn’t get the news that the webslinger would join the Avengers this week, and the latest rumor could reveal that the studio is scrambling to figure out what to do with their franchise.

At first Sony announced their own Spideyverse in order to compete with Marvel and WB, but with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 performing lower than expected, Sony went back to the drawing board. One of their first moves was to reschedule The Amazing Spider-Man 3 for a 2018 release, and reschedule the Dirty Dozen-style Sinister Six for a 2016 release. And who knows what’s going on with that Venom movie. Now Sony is rumored to have an interesting film lined up. A new report says that the studio is planning to release an all-female Spider-Man team-up film. Hit the jump for more.

eelyajekiM   |

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Header Image

There is just no end to the Spider-Man franchise rumors. Yesterday, we reported that Sony might be willing to let Marvel use the character in attempts to reestablish him as the lucrative franchise character he was while Sam Raimi was directing. While it is a long shot, it is definitely a move that would benefit both houses, but also should be a huge service to fans.

Now comes a new rumor that Sony is rebooting the franchise yet again, but that it will be a “soft reboot.” There are also murmurings of the Alex Kurtzman-directed Venom being cancelled. Hit the jump to learn more.
